The global crime organization which we know as the Mafia traces its origins to the orange groves of the Conca D'Oro, the rich hinterland of Palermo, Sicily, during the early nineteenth century. It was here that the "mafia of the gardens", made up of loose networks of bandits, built their industry of crime. In exploring the Mafia's remarkable rise to power, Raimondo Catanzaro shows how these rural bands successfully opposed the encroaching authority of the Italian government in Sicily during the 1840s, as they infiltrated it, took control of its agencies, and effectively replaced it as the force of law throughout the island. Unlike past chroniclers, Catanzaro sees no break between the traditional rural mafiosi of the nineteenth century and the flashy criminals of today. To the contrary, he demonstrates that the fluid and unstructured composition of the early Mafia enabled it to change its form and thereby survive the many lethal threats it encountered, where a more rigid and unified organization would have failed. This ability to adapt was never more apparent than during the Socialist movement of the Sicilian Fasci in the 1890s. While older, established mafiosi intimidated and murdered local party organizers, younger mafiosi extended the Mafia's power by joining and then subverting these political movements. In his presentation of the recent history of the Mafia Catanzaro makes particularly ingenious use of the Italian Parliament's 40,000 page Commissione Anti-Mafia report to trace the explosive growth of this criminal enterprise since World War II. Here his narrative details the increasing involvement of mafiosi in clandestine commerce, first of tobacco, and then, during the last twodecades, of drugs and arms. Catanzaro presents the hitherto untold story of an organization that continues to affect us to this day.

'Words Are Stones' deals with his impressions and experiences from journeys he made to Sicily, of its landscape and of the characteristic life of its people, the emphasis being all the time on their ignorance, their backwardness, their appalling poverty, and, at the same time, their graciousness. Signor Levi writes extremely well; he is capable of fine descriptive passages as well as of the mere reporting of facts, and also he has a sense of humor. The book is divided into three sections. The first is a brilliant report of the visit of former Mayor Impelliteri of New York to his native Sicilian village. The scene then shifts to the sulphur mines outside Palermo, where Levi finds a strike is in progress. He sees there a a full clash between a feudal world and the modern, and witnesses the slow struggle of the miners not only to tell their story but to successfully negotiate for what is taken for granted elsewhere. Again the scene shifts, and threader is led into a Capuchin cemetery which recalls the Sicily of centuries ago. Here are 8000 mummified bodies, dating from 1621, and preserved in a manner now forbidden by law. The second section of the book takes us to Taormina, Catania, and into the strange country around Mt. Etna. In the third section of the book Levi writes a long and moving saga of a young man, a peasant leader, who opposed the Mafia and was murdered by them. Levi visits the young man's mother, and through her account we learn of the deep-rooted Sicilian network of police, bandit, peasant, worker, and employer. Levi's visit to this young man's mother is the climax of the book, and when we read in her words how the Mafia killed her son, mutilated his face so that he could not be identified, and then stole forty chickens for a banquet to celebrate his death, the story has the proportions of a Greek tragedy. In this book one sense the strong and ancient traditions of the Sicilian people, one sees the incredibly beautiful natural surroundings in which they live, and one learns of their ambitions and struggles as they attempt to become part of the modern world, a world which in a sense they do not wholly trust."--Front and back flaps of book jacket.
