Ad Ostuni siamo nati e cresciuti, per questo la sentiamo nelle narici sin dal mattino presto. Ma la Dama bianca è una lama nel cuore, una parte del nostro carattere, del nostro modo di pensare. Sembrerà strano, ma chi è nato ad Ostuni - anche se ormai da tanti anni lontano dalla propria terra - quando pensa lo fa esclusivamente in dialetto. Insomma, la Città Bianca è una parte di noi. Qui c’è tutto. Dalla selva alla marina, dalle contrade rurali alla città. Chi visita Ostuni si porta nel cuore il profumo delle sette di pomeriggio d’estate, quando il sole cala a tre quarti dietro le mura di calce bianca e l’aria si colora di un tiepido torpore. L’erba nei muretti a secco levigati dal tempo, insieme al cielo limpido tinto dei colori della Città, entra nella mente provocando una sensazione di libertà e riposo. Questo viaggio ci ha anche insegnato a ritrovare, in un percorso lungo quasi tremila anni, il carattere degli ostunesi: pronti a darsi al padrone di turno, rendendogli i propri servigi, ma al tempo stesso sempre desiderosi di conquistare autonomia e indipendenza. Non a caso la caratteristica che accompagna Ostuni in circa cinque secoli di storia è la continua richiesta di vedersi liberata dai vincoli feudali con la concessione del Regio Demanio. Gli ostunesi sono ancora oggi così. Sempre pronti a carpire da che parte tira il vento e a rinnegare gli amici, ma generosi come nessuno e capaci di tendere la mano anche al nemico, soprattutto quando si tenta di ottenerne vantaggi. Invidiosi sì, forse molto, cattivi mai. Maestri in ogni cosa: nell’agricoltura, nelle arti, nei mestieri, nelle costruzioni, nel commercio, nelle lettere, nell’oratoria. Abili nel contrattare, stupidi in amore. Ma pur sempre unici e inconfondibili. Il titolo del libro, Terra Nostra, che è lo stesso sia del saggio storico che della novella (il libello si compone infatti di due parti), non è casuale. Ostuni è definita in tal modo nel 1304 da Filippo I d’Angiò, principe di Taranto. La Prefazione è a cura del prof. Donato Coppola, paletnologo ostunese di fama internazionale che il 24 ottobre 1991 scoprì in Ostuni la mamma più antica del mondo, i cui resti risalgono a circa 28 mila anni fa. Postfazione a firma dell’avv. Michele Conte, presidente del Museo di Civiltà Preclassiche della Murgia meridionale. Il saggio storico, scritto da entrambi, ripercorre tutta la storia di Ostuni dal Mille a.C. fino alla metà del secolo scorso (preceduta da un paragrafo introduttivo sul ritrovamento dei resti della Donna di Ostuni), con particolare approfondimento del periodo medievale.
