Today, nearly a century after the National Fascist Party came to power in Italy, questions about the built legacy of the regime provoke polemics among architects and scholars. Mussolini’s government constructed thousands of new buildings across the Italian Peninsula and islands and in colonial territories. From hospitals, post offices and stadia to housing, summer camps, Fascist Party Headquarters, ceremonial spaces, roads, railways and bridges, the physical traces of the regime have a presence in nearly every Italian town. The Routledge Companion to Italian Fascist Architecture investigates what has become of the architectural and urban projects of Italian fascism, how sites have been transformed or adapted and what constitutes the meaning of these buildings and cities today. The essays include a rich array of new arguments by both senior and early career scholars from Italy and beyond. They examine the reception of fascist architecture through studies of destruction and adaptation, debates over reuse, artistic interventions and even routine daily practices, which may slowly alter collective understandings of such places. Paolo Portoghesi sheds light on the subject from his internal perspective, while Harald Bodenschatz situates Italy among period totalitarian authorities and their symbols across Europe. Una narrazione che ha inizio ai tempi di Garibaldi, passando per la bonifica dell’Agro-Pontino fino ai giorni nostri. Cosa hanno in comune i personaggi? Sono tutti Montanari. Un cognome, un’assonanza, una stirpe. Il racconto fa rivivere molti sillogismi dialettali della terra d’origine, Ferrara, ed è nella forza dell’idioma che si cela l’autenticità della storia. Il dialetto non sempre è sinonimo di ignoranza o povertà ma diventa, nella sua accezione, la ricerca di come veniva intesa la vita prima; di quali valori avevano una stretta di mano, la puntualità, oppure offrire un piatto di minestra. Camminando affiancati tra la modernità e ciò che è già stato, si assiste a una partenza, per quella Terra Promessa, in cerca di fortuna e pane. Attraverso la storia dei coloni che hanno abbandonato le loro terre, si ripercorre l’edificazione di quell’opera immane che gli uomini e le donne insieme hanno permesso, in così pochi anni. Nella storia di ogni famiglia, così come in quella dei Montanari, c’è un qualcosa che da sempre si tramanda di padre in figlio, vita dopo vita, e che finalmente – a un certo punto – colma e sazia, ristora e disseta, illude ed eleva: il dono. La domanda viene ufficialmente accolta e quel timbro pone fine alle titubanze. In una penombra che trasuda presagio, un po’ come fosse quell’ultima cena, riuniti attorno al tavolo della spaziosa e modesta cucina, il papà Luigi, senza nemmeno toccare la mezza patata che ha nel piatto, prega: Alora, ragazit, sa fegna? A n’aven gnent da magnar, pero aven al brazz fortj. Nu a seŋ onesti, con dal curagg e dla voja ad far: andegna tutt’i assiem a star a Roma? (Allora, ragazzi miei, che si fa? Non abbiamo da mangiare, però abbiamo le braccia forti e siamo onesti, coraggiosi e con la voglia di fare: andiamo tutti insieme a vivere nei pressi di Roma?). Stazione di Ferrara, dicembre 1933: papà Luigi, mamma Argia assieme ai figli Giovanni, Vittorio, Pasquino, Nevio e Gina. Le note di quella banda che dovrebbe galvanizzare in realtà fanno scendere le ultime lacrime fino a bagnare la terra che stanno per lasciare.
