In questo volume Francesco Occhibianco propone ai lettori una sintesi degli scritti del missionario Francesco de Geronimo (1642-1716), canonizzato nel 1839. Un compendio interessante e, per certi versi, indispensabile, per entrare nel "mondo degeronimiano" e per riascoltare, a distanza di trecento anni dalla morte, le prediche del grande apostolo di Napoli. Con questo volume al momento si conclude la serie degli studi sul de Geronimo, che l'autore ha condotto per molti anni con febbrile passione ed entusiasmo. Nelle sue celebri ed appassionate prediche il padre Francesco de Geronimo (1642-1716) cit� spesso gli animali, presi ad esempio di virt� e di vizi, a seconda dell'argomento trattato. Il bestiario degeronimiano include orsi, leoni, tigri, serpenti, aquile, mosche, balene, lupi, cigni, cani, cavalli, aspidi, scimmie, lepri, asini. Il santo missionario della Compagnia di Ges� si definiva un ciuccio, pronto a ragliare per le strade di Napoli (in particolare davanti al Maschio Angioino e nei famigerati Quartieri Spagnoli) sotto la sferza di un sole cocente, pur di convertire i peccatori e di farli "tornare a Cristo". Alcuni miracoli del taumaturgo videro la presenza degli animali, veri e propri protagonisti della scena; tra questi prodigi il pi� celebre fu quello dei buoi che, nonostante le ripetute e sonore bastonate del contadino, si inginocchiarono davanti al Crocifisso della Missione, fino al termine del suo sermone.

Francesco Occhibianco è un appassionato studioso del santo missionario gesuita Francesco de Geronimo, nato a Grottaglie il 17 dicembre del 1642 e morto a Napoli l'11 maggio del 1716. In questo libro, partendo da quello che può essere considerato il più antico dipinto ad olio che ritrae il taumaturgo (si tratta di un quadro proveniente da Avellino), l'Autore ricostruisce in maniera completa e capillare l'intera iconografia degeronimiana. Il padre Francesco de Geronimo, come scrissero i suoi primi biografi, Carlo Stradiotti, Simone Bagnati e Carlo De Bonis, aveva una fronte alta e spaziosa, un naso aquilino, un collo sottile. Gli occhi erano vivaci e penetranti. La sua voce, che all'inizio del suo apostolato sembrava non poter reggere la fatica di tante prediche, veniva ascoltata anche ad una certa distanza. La carnagione del santo era bruna, i capelli neri, ma radi. Nell'ultimo periodo della sua vita, la mancanza di denti conferiva al suo volto un aspetto di grazia e non difetto.
