Questo studio di Simone Candela è da considerare come la prima storia completa dell'ascesa, fortuna e decadenza, prima di tutto economica, dei Florio, minuziosa sino ai conti della spesa, che venne inoltre a sfatare alcuni luoghi comuni sugli «aristocratici» borghesi della Palermo felicissima. La presente edizione giunge al lettore con novità e aggiunte nella parte finale, risultanti da nuovi materiali d'archivio, ma conservando il risvolto di copertina con cui Leonardo Sciascia presentava la prima del 1986: «La rapidità dei ricambi, delle alternanze, delle sostituzioni e successioni è una “costante” della vita siciliana, della storia siciliana. All'interno di ogni categoria sociale - aristocrazia, “borghesia”, imprenditorialità, mafia - non c'è mai stato l'assestamento di una “discendenza”, di una continuità nell'ordine delle generazioni. Con antica voce sarebbe da dire che ogni principio contiene la fine, ogni ascesa la decadenza, ogni accumulazione la disgregazione: e nel rapido succedere, per dirla con l'immagine ultima del Mastro don Gesualdo, alle mani di coloro che “hanno fatto la pappa”, le mani di coloro che imprevidentemente e prodigalmente la disperdono. Da ciò, appunto in Verga, quella specie di “superstitio” che alla volontà di mutar stato, e al mutarlo, assegna catastrofe e pena. Da ciò il dover mutar tutto affinché nulla muti del principe di Lampedusa. «A tale “costante” non sono sfuggiti i Florio. Ma sarebbe fin troppo facile, e di facile letteratura, inscrivere interamente in essa la loro parabola. Nella loro ascesa e nel loro declino si può anche intravedere una fatalità verghiana e lampedusiana: ma ci sono anche, e sopratutto, delle ragioni precise, delle ragioni “scientifiche”: nel senso che la scienza dell'economia può sceverarle e analizzarle. Quello che viene assunto come mito, un mito che oggi si assomma al “revival” della bella epoca, dell'arte nuova, del liberty, è un fatto: ha cause, concause, effetti che hanno a che fare con eventi storici, leggi dello Stato, mercati, concorrenze, errori. Ed è quel che in questo libro Simone Candela studia e mette in luce, attraverso un lavoro d'archivio finora trascurato».

La storia dei Florio, la più prestigiosa famiglia siciliana del secondo Ottocento e dei primissimi anni del Novecento, con collegamenti con i più alti vertici della finanza e dell’industria internazionale e rapporti con regnanti di tutta Europa, è espressa molto bene dal sarcastico aforisma degli americani nei confronti di quelle famiglie di immigrati «che iniziarono in maniche di camicia e, nel corso di tre generazioni, si ritrovarono in maniche di camicia». È purtroppo così! Oggi il loro nome in Italia e all’estero è ricordato soltanto da una marca di liquori e da una corsa automobilistica su strada, la Targa Florio, tra le più antiche d’Europa. Ma per l’immaginario collettivo siciliano e meridionale in genere i Florio da tempo sono entrati nella leggenda e nel mito. Rappresentano gli uomini simbolo delle capacità imprenditoriali del Sud, i tempi nostalgicamente sempre rievocati in cui anche al sud fiorivano iniziative industriali vincenti. Allora, nella seconda metà dell’Ottocento, il nome Florio equivaleva nel campo della navigazione mercantile a quelli, nei decenni successivi, degli Agnelli nell’industria automobilistica o di Berlusconi nel settore televisivo. Ed era noto in Italia e all’estero, perché i loro cento piroscafi solcavano tutti i mari del mondo e i loro prodotti (vini e tonno in scatola) conquistavano i mercati italiani e stranieri. Cancila ricostruisce le vicende della famiglia Florio da storico, senza nessuna concessione agiografica né indulgenza regionalistica, ma con rigore scientifico e rifuggendo da interpretazioni romanzesche. E tuttavia, sebbene si avvalga di una ricchissima documentazione d’archivio, più che un’opera storica, la sua sembra la storia romanzata di una famiglia, una favola antica cui manca soltanto il lieto fine.

John Florio (1553-1625), known in Italian as Giovanni Florio [dʒoˈvanni ˈflɔːrjo], was a linguist and lexicographer, a royal language tutor at the Court of James I, and a possible friend and influence on William Shakespeare. He was also the first translator of Montaigne into English. He was born in London, and in 1580 he married Aline, the sister of poet Samuel Daniel. The couple had three children, Joane Florio, baptised in Oxford in 1585; Edward, in 1588 and Elizabeth, in 1589. He died in Fulham, London in 1625. His Italian and English dictionary, entitled A World of Words, was published in folio in 1598. After the accession of James I, Florio was named French and Italian tutor to Prince Henry and afterwards became a gentleman of the privy chamber and Clerk of the Closet to the Queen Consort Anne of Denmark, whom he also instructed in languages. A substantially expanded version of A World of Words was published in 1611 as Queen Anna's New World of Words, or Dictionarie of the Italian and English.
