The Gordon Setter is a large breed of dog that is a member of the setter family. The setter family is classified as either being made up of sporting dogs or gun dogs depending the preference of the national kennel club or council. It is believed that the Gordon Setter, and all setters, descends from the old Land Spaniel and that they came into existence during the late 1800s. The Gordon Setter was originally developed in Scotland for the purposes of hunting game birds. The modern Gordon Setter has a predominantly black coat with light tan markings on its chest, legs and muzzle. The breed is also commonly known as 'Black and Tans' due to its coat coloration. The Gordon Setter is also the largest breed within the setter family. The temperament of dogs is normally affected by the following factors: individual personality, heredity, training and socialization.
