Is it possible to make mathematical drawings that help to understand mathematical ideas, proofs, and arguments? The [Author];s of this book are convinced that the answer is yes and the objective of this book is to show how some visualization techniques may be employed to produce pictures that have both mathematical and pedagogical interest. Mathematical drawings related to proofs have been produced since antiquity in China, Arabia, Greece, and India, but only in the last thirty years has there been a growing interest in so-called ``proofs without words''. Hundreds of these have been published in Mathematics Magazine and The College Mathematics Journal, as well as in other journals, books, and on the internet. Often a person encountering a ``proof without words'' may have the feeling that the pictures involved are the result of a serendipitous discovery or the consequence of an exceptional ingenuity on the part of the picture's creator. In this book, the [Author];s show that behind most of the pictures, ``proving'' mathematical relations are some well-understood methods. As the reader shall see, a given mathematical idea or relation may have many different images that justify it, so that depending on the teaching level or the objectives for producing the pictures, one can choose the best alternative.

Elementary preservice teachers’school experiences of mathematics and science have shaped their images of knowing, including what counts as knowledge and what it means to know (in) mathematics and science. In this book, preservice teachers’ voices challenge the hegemony of official everyday narratives relating to these images. The book is written as a parody of a physical science textbook on the topic of light, presenting a kaleidoscope of elementary preservice teachers’ narratives of knowing (in) mathematics and science. These narratives are tied together by the metaphorical thread of the properties of light, but also held apart by the tensions and contradictions with/in such a critical epistemological exploration. Through a postmodern lens, the only grand narrative that could be imag(in)ed for this text is one in which the personal lived experience narratives of the participants mingle and interweave to create a sort of kaleidoscope of narratives. With each turn of a kaleidoscope, light’s reflection engenders new patterns and emergent designs. The narratives of this research text highlight patterns of exclusion, gendered messages, binary oppositions, and the particle nature and shadowy texture of knowing (in) mathematics and science. The presentation format of the book emphasizes the reflexive and polyphonic nature of the research design, illustrated through layers of spoken text with/in performative text with/in metaphorical text. The metaphor of a kaleidoscope is an empowering possibility for a critical narrative written to both engage and provoke the reader into imag(in)ing a critical journey toward possibilities for a different “knowing by heart” in mathematics and science and for appreciating lived experience narratives with/in teacher education.

"With freshness, humour and originality, Sue Gifford demonstrates the interactive strategies that are required to teach mathematics to young children. The text is both refreshingly free from conventional wisdom and solidly grounded in recent research on learning and teaching early mathematics. At the same time, it is unfailing in its accuracy in uncovering children's own humour and instinct for subverting 'teacherly' overtures. Given the demonstrated lack of spontaneous mathematics in early childhood setting, this assembled collage of children's own observations, activities and comments is in itself a work of art." Professor Carol Aubrey, Institute of Education, University of Warwick, UK. What are the most important aspects of mathematics for young children to learn? How do children learn mathematics? How can adults best ‘teach’ mathematics to children so young? The book informs practitioners, students and parents about how three– to five-year-olds learn mathematics, and shows them how best to develop enjoyable mathematical learning in early years settings. The book includes a summary of relevant research and considers issues relating to current practice. This book: Establishes principles for teaching mathematics to young children Takes into account the way children learn, including social, emotional, physical and cognitive aspects Helps practitioners find the middle ground between not initiating enough mathematical activity and being too directive Suggests principles and frameworks for planning and assessment. The book places particular emphasis on adult-initiated, number-focused activities and playful, challenging and sensitive teaching strategies to engage younger children. The strategies are based on research and work with practitioners, and are illustrated by children’s own responses, such as making number jokes. It covers key areas of mathematics, including number, shape and space, measures and problem solving, with appropriate expectations and common difficulties as well as suggested activities. Essential reading for those teaching or preparing to teach mathematics to young children, as well as parents interested in the mathematical education of their children.

Research in mathematics teacher education as a distinctive field of inquiry has grown substantially over the past 10-15 years. Within this field there is emerging interest in how mathematics teacher educators (MTEs) themselves learn and develop. Until recently there were few published studies on this topic, and the processes by which mathematics teacher educators learn, and the forms of knowledge they require for effective practice, had not been systematically investigated. However, researchers in mathematics education are now beginning to investigate the development of MTE expertise and associated issues. This volume draws on the latest research and thinking in this area is therefore timely to stimulate future development and directions. It will survey the emerging field of inquiry in mathematics education, combining the work of established scholars with perspectives of newcomers to the field, with the aim of influencing development of the field, invite cross-cultural comparisons in becoming a mathematics teacher educator by highlighting issues in the development of MTEs in different countries, and examine the roles of both mathematics educators and mathematicians in preparing future teachers of mathematics. The primary audience will be university-based mathematics teacher educators and MTE researchers, and postgraduate research students who are seeking academic careers as MTEs. Additional interest may come from teacher educators in disciplines other than mathematics, and education policy makers responsible for accreditation and quality control of initial teacher education programs.
