A biographic book I hope my children will never read. Reading my diary, 20 years later, some questions come up quickly: how am I still alive? How come I have never been arrested? The book tells my day-to-day life during my time as a college student in which besides drinking beer and smoking pot regularly, I also had street fights, stole, had sexual intercourse with stranger women, brought drugs from Holland, damaged public places, fell in love and cried. A politically incorrect book I hope my children will never read.

As the only person with a camera attending the first Sex Pistols gig outside London at the Lesser Free Trade Hall in Manchester on Friday June 4th 1976, I unwittingly captured a piece of musical history which still intrigues people to this day. I was covering the event for the magazine that I was producing at the time entitled Penetration.Today those photographs, as well as many others taken by me during that period, are selling around the world courtesy of Getty Images appearing in books and magazines as well as featuring in a number of TV and film documentariesI was born in Manchester when music first went 'pop' and the teenager made its first appearance in society. I left school at the earliest opportunity without any qualifications and very little interest in education or even reading. I worked in a photographic studio for one year before joining my father as a window cleaner which I worked at for the next ten years. I fell in love with rock music at an early age and regardless of my lack of education produced two magazines. 'Purple Smoke' an arts magazine and the aforementioned 'Penetration Rock Magazine' as a consequence of this and my association with the music scene I quickly took the alcohol, drugs and backstage pass route to oblivion. When people would be talking about whether their glass was half empty or half full I didn't need to ponder the question as I'd be at the bar getting a top up. Along the way with the help of several girlfriends and a large dose of realisation I decided to try and educate myself and improve myself as a person in general. I later became interested in comedy and spent fifteen years writing sketches for popular TV shows both in the UK and in Germany. With this book the music and comedy blend together to create a style far removed from other books covering similar events and periods in time. It takes us all the way from my earliest recollections to today, in my late fifties, attending hardcore raves. With anecdotes about the music scene and tales from behind the stage door with amongst others Motorhead, Hawkwind, Steve Peregrine Took And the Damned, through to my time living in the next room to Mick Hucknall and later as a neighbour of Richard Madeley, Judy Finnegan and Tony Wilson. There are also tales from the church of Dirty Dick the Swinging Vic to a prostitute by the name of Tenpenny cabbage, from a glass collector in Cornwall called Rat Spew to a rugby player I accompanied to Paris by the name of Black Man's Bum. An unusual journey through psychedelic music, rock music, punk, metal, techno, trance and finally happy hardcore, from the Pink Fairies to the Russ Abbot Show, Wayne County to the Jonathan Ross Show and with lots of previously unseen photographs and associated visuals. The first page of the book features the song title 'Life's What You Make It' by talk talk and my story is of somebody who against the odds created a decent life for himself after such an unpromising start. My school reports said that I was a daydreamer who they expected would be a failure however one thing is certain with this book you can always expect the unexpected.

Spells Images And Mandalas written by Koichi Shinohara and has been published by Columbia University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2014-08-05 with Religion categories.

Koichi Shinohara traces the evolution of Esoteric Buddhist rituals from the simple recitation of spells in the fifth century to complex systems involving image worship, mandala initiation, and visualization practices in the ninth century. He presents an important new reading of a seventh-century Chinese text called the Collected Dharani Sutras, which shows how earlier rituals for specific deities were synthesized into a general Esoteric initiation ceremony and how, for the first time, the notion of an Esoteric Buddhist pantheon emerged. In the Collected Dharani Sutras, rituals for specific deities were typically performed around images of the deities, yet Esoteric Buddhist rituals in earlier sources involved the recitation of spells rather than the use of images. The first part of this study explores how such simpler rituals came to be associated with the images of specific deities and ultimately gave rise to the general Esoteric initiation ceremony described in the crucial example of the All-Gathering mandala ritual in the Collected Dharani Sutras. The visualization practices so important to later Esoteric Buddhist rituals were absent from this ceremony, and their introduction would fundamentally change Esoteric Buddhist practice. This study examines the translations of dharani sutras made by Bodhiruci in the early eighth century and later Esoteric texts, such as Yixing's commentary on the Mahavairocana sutra and Amoghavajra's ritual manuals, to show how incorporation of visualization greatly enriched Esoteric rituals and helped develop elaborate iconographies for the deities. Over time, the ritual function of images became less certain, and the emphasis shifted toward visualization. This study clarifies the complex relationship between images and ritual, changing how we perceive Esoteric Buddhist art as well as ritual.

Was Al Gore only half-kidding at the 1992 Democratic Convention when he compared Bill Clinton to "the King?" Why does Elvis's name and image still pop up in so many movies, television shows, and songs? From black velvet paintings, comic books, and postage stamps to impersonators, movie characters, and sports stars, Images of Elvis Presley in American Culture, 1977--1997 provides a surprisingly broad vista from which to view American popular culture. An insightful exploration of America's overwhelming and enduring cultural fascination with the expanding and elusive Elvis myth, this book combines historical, textual, and sociocultural analysis with a wide range of resource materials to examine the many images of Elvis in American culture. Focusing on the period following his death in 1977 up to the present, Elvis Presley in American Culture, 1977--1997 informs and entertains popular readers and academicians in American studies, popular culture, radio/television/film, sociology, music, and 20th-century American history. Author George Plasketes shows us how representations, reflections, responses, and references to Elvis in art, artifacts, film, video, television, music, performance, literature, memorabilia, and alleged sightings, continue to make American culture a "mystery terrain" of endless "Elvistas." The repetition of these images is a link to our cultural identity. Elvis Presley in American Culture, 1977--1997 provides the necessary critical analysis and the resource guide to the various representations of Elvis during the past 20 years, to give readers an engaging and informative way to pursue and interpret the expansive and ever-evolving Elvis myth and its importance to American popular culture.

Breaking Images written by Gianluca Miniaci and has been published by Oxbow Books this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2023-02-16 with Social Science categories.

Archaeological remains are ‘fragmented by definition’: apart from exceptional cases, the study of the human past takes into account mainly traces, ruins, discards, and debris of past civilizations. It is rare that things have been preserved as they were originally made and conceived in the past. However, not all the ancient fragmentary objects were the ‘leftovers’ from the past. A noticeable portion of them was part and parcel of the ancient materiality already in the form of a fragment or damaged item. In 2000, John Chapman, with his volume Fragmentation in Archaeology, attracted the attention of scholars on the need to reconsider broken artifacts as the result of the deliberate anthropic process of physical fragmentation. The phenomenon of fragmentation can be thus explored with more outcomes for a category of objects that played an important role inside the society: the figurines. Due to their portability and size, figurines are particularly entangled and engaged in social, spatial, temporal, and material relations, and – more than other artifacts – can easily accommodate acts of embodiment and dismemberment. The act of creation symmetrically also involves the act of destruction, which in turn is another act of creation, since from the fragmentation comes a new entity with a different ontology. Breaking contains the paradigms of life: creation and reparation, destruction and regeneration. The scope of this volume is to search for traces of any voluntary and intentional fragmentation of ancient artifacts, creating, improving, and sharpening the methods and principles for a scientific investigation that goes beyond single author impression or sensitivity. The comparative lens adopted in this volume can allow the reader to explore different fields taken from ancient societies of how we can address, assess, detect, and even discuss the action of breaking and mutilation of ancient figurines.
