Il movimento artistico dei macchiaioli, come è noto, è un’espressione importante, dell’arte e della cultura italiana manifestatasi negli anni a cavallo fra il 1856 e il 1875, che coinvolse artisti di grande spessore come Giovanni Fattori, Telemaco Signorini, Silvestro Lega, Adriano Cecioni, Odoardo Borrani nonché il critico e intellettuale, mecenate e sostenitore del gruppo Diego Martelli, che solevano riunirsi al Caffè Michelangiolo, storico caffè d’arte nel cuore di un’importante città italiana come Firenze, al quale approdarono negli anni ‘50 dell’ottocento giovani pittori da ogni parte d’Italia, che asserragliati nella seconda stanza del caffè discutevano di estetica e tecniche pittoriche alternative allo stile tradizionale, che confluivano nella macchia, espressione importante dell’epopea risorgimentale. Proprio le profonde contraddizioni della società e il disagio avvertito dal sofferto sogno unitario, unito ad uno spirito ribelle e patriottico costituisce lo sfondo su cui si staglia e si distingue l’opera dei giovani artisti macchiaioli, che con la loro pennellata sono capaci di mostrare il volto di una Nazione e le lacerazioni di un secolo, ricomponendo nelle loro tele tutta la storia e le profonde problematiche di un paese, caratterizzato da durissime lotte sociali nei decenni precedenti e successivi all’Unificazione italiana. Infatti la loro produzione artistica fu fortemente influenzata da alcuni importanti avvenimenti, come i fermenti risorgimentali e patriottici, che portarono quasi tutti i nostri giovani pittori sul fronte di guerra a combattere in prima persona, a volte anche perdendo la loro vita, per l’indipendenza italiana, arruolandosi persino coi mille di Garibaldi, come accadde al giovane Raffaello Sernesi che morì proprio a causa delle ferite riportate in battaglia. Emblematiche risultano essere a tal proposito, tele suggestive come quella di Odoardo Borrani Cucitrici di camicie rosse o Ritratto di Giuseppe Garibaldi di Silvestro Lega che ce lo raffigura in camicia rossa con gli occhi da “matto visionario”. L’analisi sociologica da me proposta in questo lavoro, intorno alla stagione macchiaiola, abbraccia a tutto tondo e ha indagato minuziosamente, la complessità della società degli ultimi decenni dell’Ottocento. Nel primo capitolo ho focalizzato la mia attenzione sulla nascita della corrente e sui suoi protagonisti, indagando i vari aspetti che hanno maggiormente influenzato la loro produzione artistica, come i fermenti risorgimentali. Ho proseguito la mia analisi soffermandomi sul maggior rappresentante di questo movimento, Giovanni Fattori, con un’attenta descrizione di tutta la sua produzione artistica sia giovanile che matura. Mentre il terzo capitolo l’ho dedicato interamente ad una profonda riflessione sociologica sul rapporto del macchiaiolismo, con il contesto storico di quel tempo, soprattutto in relazione ad alcune importanti scoperte, come quella della fotografia, e alle conseguenti implicazioni, sociali, culturali, artistiche, sul successivo sviluppo delle arti in relazione a questa nuova tecnologia dell’immagine. Naturalmente non ho la pretesa di aver esaurito definitivamente l’analisi intorno alla storia ed al significato artistico e sociale di questo importante movimento. Ho cercato di gettare, e mi auguro di averlo fatto, con il mio lavoro una fervida luce e indicato talune possibilità di interpretazione di una componente della vicenda espressiva ed estetica nazionale, che potrà essere approfondita e compresa ancor meglio in futuro.
