Cultural and social groups whose outlines are difficult to identify are often considered “invisible”. Occasionally, material remains compensate for the absence of historiographical records or literary sources concerning these groups; sometimes communities or individuals mentioned in literary sources do not appear to have left material signs of their presence. On the other hand, there are groups or individuals whose existence has to be assumed in every historical period, even though they are invisible in both historiography and archaeology. Before trying to understand the lifestyle and historical agency of these “invisible cultures”, it is necessary to highlight the reasons why the memory of certain marginalized individuals or socio-cultural units disappeared or was obliterated in material culture and in literary sources. The postgraduate conference “Invisible Cultures: Historical and Archaeological Perspectives” brought together young scholars from various backgrounds and research interests to discuss these issues. This volume presents the results of this debate, through a series of selected papers, from various interdisciplinary perspectives, which analyse a variety of case studies, leading to the identification of new theoretical and methodological perspectives aimed at returning voice and presence to the “invisibles” of history.

In Proba the Prophet: The Christian Virgilian Cento of Faltonia Betitia Proba Sigrid Schottenius Cullhed offers an in-depth study and reappraisal of the Cento of Proba and its reception. Proba's poem belongs to the few extant Latin texts from Antiquity penned by a woman writer, and one of the oldest Christian Latin poems. Schottenius Cullhed surveys and challenges common preconceptions and biographical constructions of the poem's author and early readers, and examines their impact on interpretations and evaluations of the text. The author also develops and puts to use an alternative model for understanding the poem and convincingly shows how the Virgilian source texts form a complex net of internal and external biblical typologies within the Cento.

At the dawn of the Renaissance, Liber Catulli was difficult to read not only for the text but also for the arrangement of the poems: few were identified, even less had titles or graphical devices to mark them. After a century, nevertheless, the book became a poetic collection in modern terms: what happened? This work provides an overview of the process, comparing paratestual evidences in latest manuscripts and first printed editions of Catullus, in order to better understand his concrete transmission, types of book or poem titles used by scribes and their relations with the meaning of the text. Following a time criterion, the author collected the most relevant paratextual facts in witnesses, searching for the innovations and constants: the first seems to coincide with philological vanguards of the XV century, while the second sheds useful lights on contamination phenomenon, that deeply affects the transmission of Catullus. This book helps to trace an outline of the comprehension of the poems and fata libelli from the late XIV to early XVI century.

La sezione introduttiva consta di due parti: nella prima si contestualizza il Nicocles all’interno della produzione isocratea e se ne approfondisce la fortuna in età umanistico-rinascimentale per il tramite delle traduzioni; nella seconda parte si inquadra la versione guariniana all’interno della vicenda biografica e dell’attività pedagogico-letteraria dell’autore. Il corpo centrale del volume è invece costituito dall’edizione critica del testo di Guarino: all’esposizione dei risultati del lavoro di recensio e di collazione segue il testo ricostruito dall’autrice, corredato di apparato critico, traduzione italiana e note filologiche di commento. Il volume si conclude con alcune osservazioni sul metodo versorio e la lingua di Guarino.
