Nell’entroterra ligure della provincia di Imperia, paesi come Borgomaro, Pontedassio, Aurigo, Chiusavecchia e soprattutto Ville San Pietro furono teatro di scontri terribili durante la seconda guerra mondiale. L’autore Alfredo Mela, appena ventenne, fu testimone di questi eventi tragici che segnarono la sua vita e quella di molti altri. Dettagliatamente, racconta, in forma di diario, come in quegli anni fosse difficile essere giovani e come quella generazione non conobbe la spensieratezza: troppo presto fece i conti con le amare esperienze della guerra, con il lavoro e la fatica. La paura e il terrore erano ovunque presenti, in ogni momento: fughe, corse per le campagne, nascondigli impensabili; l’aspra natura della Liguria contribuì ad aiutare quei giovani che avrebbero rischiato gravi conseguenze se fossero stati catturati dai nazi-fascisti. I loro alleati furono gli alberi, le rocce, le asperità del terreno: tutto per evitare quei terribili rastrellamenti; fino ad arrivare ai tragici epiloghi dello scoppio del Deposito munizioni e dell’incendio del paese di Ville San Pietro. La preziosa testimonianza di Alfredo ci rende consapevoli e partecipi di una sofferenza che ha squarciato gli animi di quella gente; con precisione e meticolosità l’autore ha saputo entrare nella Storia e donarci un frammento di vita di cui oggi rischiamo di perdere le tracce. Questo diario, pubblicato postumo, descrive con franchezza e autenticità un drammatico momento storico, ambientando la vicenda nello scenario semplice e umile della campagna del Ponente ligure. Il contrasto tra il dramma storico e la quotidiana semplicità dell’ambiente in cui esso si svolge è stato per l’autore il tema della sua ricerca storica e il pregio di questa opera.
