L'azione, in questo 3° tomo, si svolge nel 1832 e il giovane Marius Pontmercy è il protagonista della storia. Marius è figlio di un bonapartista e nipote di un realista. Con il nonno, il signor Gillenormand, con cui vive fin da piccolo, entra in rotta di collisione per questioni ideologiche, lascia la casa e frequenta gli amici dell'ABC, un gruppo rivoluzionario di giovani idealisti e repubblicani. Studia, in condizioni di quasi miseria, per diventare avvocato, ma soprattutto si innamora di Cosette, o meglio di una misteriosa ragazza che è solito vedere nei giardini del Lussemburgo, accompagnata dal padre, cioè da Jean Valjean. Per caso viene a sapere che una banda di delinquenti capitanata da Thénardier vuole tendere un agguato a Valjean per rapinarlo. Marius scopre così che il salvatore di suo padre a Waterloo è uno spregevole individuo e che il padre di colei che ama disperatamente si nasconde dalla polizia. Tutta la fine del terzo tomo è degna dei Misteri di Parigi e l'abilità di Hugo nel creare suspense e nel descrivere il superbo faccia a faccia fra Valjean e Thénardier è assolutamente straordinaria. Quinto e ultimo Tomo dell'opera, dedicato alla morte e all'annullamento. Marius, insieme agli altri insorti, combatte nella barricata, presso la quale muore anche Gavroche. Nella barricata è prigioniero Javert; Valjean, pur avendo la possibilità di vendicarsi, lascia libero il poliziotto. Egli continua a mostrare il suo eroismo portando Marius in salvo dalla barricata, attraverso un viaggio nelle fogne di Parigi: viaggio che è occasione di una stupenda digressione dello scrittore sul sistema fognario che è per lui 'la coscienza della città'. In seguito i due fuggiaschi si imbattono ancora in Javert; stavolta è il poliziotto che li lascia in libertà; non riuscendo però a perdonarsi la grave mancanza nei confronti del principio d'obbedienza alla gerarchia, sceglie di suicidarsi. Marius e Cosette, intanto, coronano il loro sogno d'amore con il matrimonio. Valjean si allontana dai due giovani; inizia però per lui un rapido declino fisico e psicologico. L'opera si conclude con la morte del protagonista, che finisce la sua tormentata vita ritrovando accanto a sé, per l'ultima volta, l'amata Cosette e Marius. Linguistic complexity is one of the currently most hotly debated notions in linguistics. The essays in this volume reflect the intricacies of thinking about the complexity of languages and language varieties (here: of English) in three major contact-related fields of (and schools in) linguistics: creolistics, indigenization and nativization studies (i.e. in the realm of English linguistics, the “World Englishes” community), and Second Language Acquisition (SLA) research: How can we adequately assess linguistic complexity? Should we be interested in absolute complexity or rather relative complexity? What is the extent to which language contact and/or (adult) language learning might lead to morphosyntactic simplification? The authors in this volume are all leading linguists in different areas of specialization, and they were asked to elaborate on those facets of linguistic complexity which are most relevant in their area of specialization, and/or which strike them as being most intriguing.
