Il Baldus di Teofilo Folengo è un poema eroico-parodistico del Cinquecento di indubbio valore letterario e linguistico. In questa pregevole traduzione in ottave – o per meglio dire “travestimento”, come scrive il curatore di questo volume – l’italiano moderno prende il posto del linguaggio macaronico dell’epoca. La scrupolosità della traduzione, il rispetto del testo e l’insieme degli effetti umoristici vengono tuttavia mantenuti inalterati, restituendo la bellezza e la complessità di un’opera che era anche una critica alla società di allora. Infarcito di volgarità e di espressioni difficilmente comprensibili nell’originale, perché frutto di un miscuglio di linguaggi, tra cui il dialetto mantovano, questa traduzione di Matteo Laterza è un tributo che getta nuova luce su un autore degno di maggiore considerazione nella storia della letteratura cinquecentesca. L’ampia introduzione, di doverosa lettura prima del godimento dell’opera, è una disamina storica e letteraria sull’autore e sul contesto letterario del Cinquecento, ricco di opere che hanno segnato la storia del nostro Paese e i caratteri socio-culturali e linguistici di una futura nazione. Matteo Laterza è nato a Bari nel 1958. Si laurea in Lettere col massimo dei voti all’Università degli Studi “Aldo Moro” di Bari nel 1981, con una tesi di Filologia italiana. Successivamente, nel 1983 intraprende la carriera di docente: prima in una scuola privata di Bari; poi, per tre anni, come docente di Lettere nella scuola secondaria statale di primo grado; infine nei licei statali, tra i quali il liceo classico “A. Calamo” di Ostuni (Br), dove ha prestato servizio come insegnante di Italiano e Latino per quattordici anni. Contemporaneamente, dal 2002 si dedica alla traduzione (o travestimento in ottave di endecasillabi) del poema macaronico Baldus, composto nel Cinquecento da Teofilo Folengo, che porta a termine nel 2021. Ha anche pubblicato a livello locale dei brevi saggi sul Pascoli latino, su F. Bracciolini e Lo scherno degli dèi e su Thomas May (autore della continuazione del Bellum civile di A. Lucano). È in pensione dal 2021. Vive a Bisceglie con la moglie e ha una figlia.
