Nel 1910 le scuole rurali private della Montesca e di Rovigliano, fondate nelle tenute umbre dei Baroni Franchetti, partecipano all’Esposizione Universale e Internazionale di Bruxelles dove si raccontano per la prima volta. L’iniziativa è frutto della lungimiranza di Alice Hallgarten che, filantropa e visionaria, mira a suscitare interesse internazionale verso un innovativo progetto pedagogico volto a contrastare l’analfabetismo e la miseria che segna la vita delle famiglie dei mezzadri locali. Nella capitale belga, i quaderni e i disegni di questi ‘figli delle campagne’, che il primo giorno di lezione fanno fatica persino a «dire il loro nome», meriteranno una medaglia d’oro e un diplôme d’honneur, riscontri ufficiali dell’impegno educativo sostenuto dalle due scuole. La mostra “Alice a Bruxelles” ricostruisce lo stand e il profilo che gli istituti presentarono all’Esposizione Universale. Riemergono così le vicende di quel primo febbrile decennio del secolo che si era avviato con l’inaugurazione delle scuole e si concludeva ora con l’apertura di una Casa dei bambini, ulteriore esito delle intense e fruttuose relazioni di mecenatismo che legarono Alice Hallgarten a Maria Montessori. Alice Hallgarten Franchetti (New York, 1874 – Leysin, 1911) porta una tradizione filantropica e un sapere cosmopolita nelle campagne umbre, dove opera secondo le modalità del femminismo pratico. Inaugura il secolo con la fondazione della scuola della Montesca, seguita poi da quella di Rovigliano. Le sue iniziative e la collaborazione con Maria Montessori avranno un effetto degno di nota sia sul piano nazionale che su quello internazionale.

Qual è la reale competenza scrittoria mediale di scriventi con istruzione elementare e quali fattori sono da ritenere costitutivi di tale competenza? Questo il quesito al quale si è cercato di rispondere sulla base dell'analisi di un corpus di >scrittura popolareArchivio Diaristico Nazionale di Pieve S. Stefano: una trentina di memorie, diari e lettere, prevalentemente manoscritti, di scriventi toscani del '900, tutti con istruzione scolastica elementare (3--6 anni). La competenza mediale riguarda i livelli di scrittura costitutivi del codice scritto: l'ortografia, l'interpunzione e l'aspetto esteriore del testo. I dati rilevati vengono confrontati sia con le diverse caratteristiche socioculturali degli scriventi (livello di scolarità, attività professionale, età e sesso dello scrivente, ecc.) sia con la situazione comunicativa concreta, al fine di identificare i fattori rilevanti nella costituzione della competenza scrittoria (compreso l'adeguamento alle necessità comunicative). Il quadro teorico in cui si sviluppa l'indagine comprende la scrittura in quanto sistema, i processi dello scrivere, e i meccanismi di acquisizione della scrittura, mettendo a frutto i risultati di tali ricerche per lo specifico contesto della scrittura popolare italiana e avvicinando cos delle discipline sinora senza contatto tra loro.
