Scrivendo in coda a un secolo tragico e violento, Chaucer ritrae l’Inghilterra come una nazione armoniosamente discorde, dove la virtù prevale sul vizio e il vizio è occasione di riso, più che motivo di indignazione. Per farlo, mette in scena un gruppo di pellegrini diretti da Londra a Canterbury, che si ritrovano lungo il cammino e – sul modello del Decameron di Boccaccio – si raccontano a turno delle storie. Ci sono un oste bonario e un po’ prevaricatore, un cavaliere modesto e virtuoso che ha visto mille campagne militari, un dottore in medicina colto ma un po’ avido, e non mancano funzionari pubblici, mugnai e fattori, bravi parroci di campagna, monache vanesie e frati corrotti, e un venditore di indulgenze che si autodenuncia in un monologo comico e quasi imbarazzante, da piazzista di reliquie. Ne risulta uno spaccato di società mobile e irrequieta, i cui personaggi sembrano quasi nostri contemporanei. Sta qui il vero capolavoro di Chaucer: nella vividezza dei soggetti rappresentati nella cornice ai racconti veri e propri. Per questo sono qui riproposti esclusivamente prologhi ed epiloghi, con brevi note riassuntive per i singoli racconti: perché è la cornice la parte del corpus chauceriano che il trascorrere dei secoli ha mantenuto più viva, più appassionante per i moderni, più originale.
