Il volume raccoglie i contributi presentati al Colloquio internazionale “Les Romains dans les Alpes”, organizzato all’Università di Losanna dal 13 al 15 maggio 2019. Tema della prima sessione, orientata sulla “Grande Histoire”, è stata la presenza romana nelle Alpi, la “conquista” della catena alpina da parte dei Romani fra il III e il I secolo a.C. e la successiva assimilazione di queste regioni nel mondo romano. Le scoperte archeologiche di questi ultimi decenni hanno infatti fornito nuove informazioni sulle Alpi prima delle campagne militari di Augusto, con le quali viene comunemente identificata la sottomissione delle popolazioni indigene al potere romano. L’epigrafia è stata invece la protagonista della seconda sessione, nella quale gli studiosi hanno presentato nuove scoperte e nuovi approcci nell’ambito dell’epigrafia alpina, dell’onomastica antica e dello studio delle culture epigrafiche. Le ricerche attuali hanno messo bene in evidenza i contatti culturali e linguistici tra le popolazioni alpine e i Romani, richiamati dai relatori partendo da approcci diversi.

V knjigi devetnajst avtorjev iz štirih držav (Italije, Slovenije, Hrvaške in Avstrije) predstavlja zgodovinske, epigrafske in arheološke dokaze o prisotnosti rimske vojske in o sledovih spopadov na območju Caput Adriae ter na vzhodni obali Jadrana. Večina prispevkov je posvečena severnemu Jadranu in njegovemu zaledju v 2. in 1. stoletju pr. Kr. Topografija prvega leta histrske vojne (178–177 pr. Kr.) je analizirana s pomočjo zgodovinskih virov. Arheološki dokazi o zgodnji rimski vojaški prisotnosti so obravnavani v več poglavjih: o vojaških taborih Koromačnik in Mala Gročanica, o začetkih Tergesta na hribu Sv. Justa, o spopadih z avtohtonim prebivalstvom in o epigrafskih sledeh rimske vojske. Ostanki zgodnjerimskih taborov ponujajo nov vpogled tudi v pokrajino srednje Dalmacije. Rimska ofenzivna politika na južnem Jadranu, ob Jonskem morju in v notranjosti Balkana je analizirana na podlagi pisnih virov.
