Considerato il più grande poeta del Medioevo occidentale prima di Dante, Chrétien de Troyes fu attivo alle corti di Champagne e di Fiandra tra il 1160 e il 1190. Nelle sue mani il romanzo arturiano divenne una forma superiore di narrativa cortese, un'incarnazione originalissima in cui il poeta fuse i propri concetti etici con l'imitazione dei poeti latini, l'eredità delle chansons de geste e dei romanzi antichi con una ricca messe di miti e di motivi che affondano le proprie radici nel sostrato celtico della Bretagna insulare e continentale. Ne sono testimonianza le cinque opere raccolte in questo volume: Erec e Enide, il primo romanzo arturiano, già di stupefacente maturità artistica, incentrato sul rapporto tra il nobile cavaliere Erec e la sposa Enide e sulla difficoltà di conciliare amore e dovere; Cligès, nel quale elementi della materia bretone si fondono con la più antica tradizione classica e greco-bizantina in un'insolita narrazione ricca di avventure e colpi di scena; Ivano, quasi un romanzo di formazione nel quale il protagonista, nel tentativo di ridiventare degno dell'amore della sposa, perduto per leggerezza, matura come persona divenendo un cavaliere perfetto; Lancillotto, dedicato al celebre amore adulterino del cavaliere per la regina Ginevra, un sentimento estatico che il poeta dipinge con toni ironici ma anche con conturbante adesione; infine Perceval, l'ultimo e incompiuto lavoro di Chrétien, anello di congiunzione con gli ideali mistici che informeranno le narrazioni successive delle gesta dei cavalieri di Artù alla ricerca del Graal.

This book investigates certain recurrent structures in the history of the novel as a textual genre and as a narrative form typical of Western literature. From its origins, in the vernacular cultures of the twelfth and thirteenth centuries, the novel text seems to be characterised by certain stylistic procedures adopted to represent a new narrative framework, which has no direct terms of comparison in the previous literary tradition. Indeed, the novel, as a ‘textual machine’, often produces a ‘narrative manipulation’ of time and duration, to the point of establishing, along its development, a very close link between History, individual memory and a prospective narrative future. This book explores some structural and formal paths of the ‘novelistic machine’, through three exemplary cases: (1) the ‘name of the novel’ at the origins of the literary genre, with the invention of a new ‘novelistic technique’ (i.e. the conjointure) by Chrétien de Troyes (twelfth century); (2) the bookform, namely, ‘the book of novels’ as a concrete and material object that transmits the narrative text and involves itself within the fictional universe; (3) the literary topos of the ‘dreaming incipit’ and its long history from the Roman de la rose to Proust. This book will be of significant interest to students and scholars of medieval literature, the history of the novel and philology.
