La Storia della Romania (e implicitamente del popolo romeno), dall’antichità alle controverse vicende della “rivoluzione” del dicembre del 1989, è una sintesi scritta con la convinzione più volte espressa dall’autore che «i peccati di oggi sono, in tanti casi, i peccati di ieri, ripetuti, aggravati, proprio perché nascosti, taciuti dagli storici, per paura di essere biasimati per mancanza di patriottismo». Florin Costantiniu si è assunto l'impegno di prescindere dai dogmi, dai tabù, dalle distorsioni della divulgata storiografia "ufficiale" imposta dal regime precedente l'89, presentando una visione personale, non neutrale dal punto di vista identitario, tuttavia lontana da tentazioni nazionalistiche, «una visione dettata dal desiderio sincero di mostrare ciò che di positivo e negativo è accaduto nel divenire dei romeni come nazione e Stato» Lo storico romeno espone il succedersi degli eventi senza condizionamenti ideologici, strutturando la narrazione storica con l'analisi sia dei rapporti di forza tra gli Stati, sia quelli fra cittadini-sudditi e potere, presi in esame da diverse prospettive (giuridica, militare, religiosa culturale ed economica), ponendo in rilievo la questione agraria che ha attraversato tutto l'arco della storia romena.

E da quando Bram Stoker, riprendendo il vampiro ideato dal medico scrittore John William Polidori, ne ha fatto il protagonista del suo omonimo capolavoro letterario, Dracula continua a esercitare la sua perversa seduzione. Uscito dalla Storia per entrare nella finzione romanzesca, si è trasformato in archetipo delle più grandi paure: l'angoscia umana di fronte alla morte, ma quella ancora più spaventosa di un'immortalità disperata e solitaria. Con questa biografia, che unisce alla rigorosa lettura storica la voce del narratore, Lantos restituisce Vlad III voivoda di Valacchia - detto Dracul, cioè Figlio del Drago - al suo tempo e alla sua terra. Percorre a ritroso il cammino dalla leggenda all'origine del terrore evocato dal nome del primo vampiro. Vissuto nella seconda metà del Quattrocento nel principato valacco, regione aspra e inquieta che i re cristiani d'Ungheria contendevano all'espansione ottomana, Vlad è incarnazione delle contraddizioni della sua era: despota e avventuriero, indomito in battaglia e incline all'intrigo di palazzo, strenuo difensore della cristianità e principe sanguinario implacabile con i nemici, acclamato eroe nazionale conosciuto però anche col truce appellativo di Impalatore. La sua fine è, manco a dirlo, avvolta nel mistero: dopo aver trovato la morte in battaglia, combattendo i turchi, delle sue spoglie si è persa ogni traccia. Questo simbolo di assoluta violenza ferina attraversa i secoli fino a noi e il "morto non morto", oltre a nutrire con la sua fosca grandezza l'immaginario collettivo, produrrà persino emuli in carne e ossa, come ci racconta puntualmente Lantos, tragicamente noti alla cronaca.
