If I were lying, I wouldnt tell you I was lying, that would defeat the purpose of lying in the first place. I said. Where should they be drilling? Where is this oil reserve? He asked. I dont know. I said. Does this Chinese gal know? He asked. Do I know if she knows? I replied. If she knows would you tell me? If she said I that could tell you, yes. I said. And if she said that you couldnt? He barked. Then I would say that I didnt know. As youre saying right now. Well, at least youre truthful. He replied, scratching his head and pacing nervously about in front of Adolphs desk. From the expression on Adolphs face, I could see that Tweedledums response had him baffled. I try. I said, again studying the quizzical look on Adolphs wrinkled face. Even when you lie you seem to be truthful. Tweedledum said, Wait a minute, were talking in circles here. Did you know that the ancient Egyptians didnt like pigs? I asked, trying one last time to break his spirit. Otherwise, they couldve invented ham. Dr. Sager, how about some straight answers to our questions? Feigning his frustrations now, trying to conceal the fact that he knew that I knew that he was playing a game he was supposed to better at than me.

After completing the shooting of Sleeping by the Mississippi in 2002, Alec Soth traveled to Bogot�, Colombia to adopt a baby girl. While the courts processed paperwork, he and his wife spent two months in the capital city waiting to take their new baby home. "The baby's birth mother gave the new parents a book filled with letters, pictures and poems. I hope that the hardness of the world will not hurt your sensitivity," she wrote, "When I think about you I hope that your life is full of beautiful things." With these words as a mission statement, Soth began making his own book for his daughter. Soth writes, "In photographing the city of her birth, I hope I've described some of the beauty in this hard place." Beauty makes itself known through ramshackle architecture, the companionship of animals, and the perseverance of the human spirit. In republican Colombia, salt became an important source of revenue not just to individuals, but to the state, which levied taxes on it and in some cases controlled and profited from its production. The salt trade consistently accounted for roughly 10 percent of government income. In the town of La Salina de Chita, in Boyaca province, thermal springs offered vast amounts of salt, and its procurement and distribution was placed under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Finance. Focusing his study on La Salina, Joshua M. Rosenthal presents a fascinating glimpse into the workings of the early Colombian state, its institutions, and their interactions with local citizens during this formative period. Although historians have cited the state's weakness and, in many cases, its absence in local affairs, Rosenthal counters these assumptions by documenting the primary role the state held in administering contracts, inspections, land rights, labor, and trade in La Salina, contending that this was not an isolated incident.
