A mom is always a mom, whether she has an infant, a teen, or a middle-aged son or daughter. From the moment her kids are born, she will always be concerned about their well-being. She will perform the mother's role forever, always worrying about them, no matter their age. Even though my kids are adults now, I still keep my cell phone on the bedside table when I sleep at night, just in case they need me. It's an old habit, but I can't help it. There is no proven need for that, and I shouldn't be their emergency response in the middle of the night, but still...I am a mom to the core. Even though every mom wants her kids to mature, grow up, and find their path in life, it's not easy to embrace their independence. They will choose to do things their own way, which in her eyes might seem reckless, dubious, or risky, in other words, built on sand. As a result, she scrambles to find peace of mind over their choices in life. But she can still have a quality life and enjoy happiness, no matter what is going on in her kids' lives. She simply needs to pick a different tactic.

What do I do when my son learns phrases in school that he's not allowed to say at home? How do I teach my daughter caution but not fear? How do I teach my daughter about gratitude when she believes she is entitled to a cell phone and a laptop and everything else that not only she wants, but that all of the kids around her already have? Melissa Trevathan and Sissy Goff hear these types of questions and many other comments from parents on a daily basis in their counseling office and at ministry events. Today, more than ever before, we live in a culture that is at war against our parenting. Between the internet, the media, the sense of entitlement that kids are living with, the disrespect . . . it is almost too much. We often wish we could move back to Mayberry, where our biggest concern was who had set off the firecrackers in the neighbor's garage. While those aren't the issues most parents are facing today, Melissa and Sissy believe we can still raise children who value, well, values. They provide a clear and possible path back to cultivating children who have a sense of character and groundedness, who may not be as rampant across playgrounds and parks as they once were. They paint the picture of how to raise children with manners and kindness and with a healthy sense of fear and respect both for their world and the adults around them--and to do so without totally disengaging from the realities of today's world. In short, they believe it is still possible to instill vintage values in modern kids. Modern Parents, Vintage Values talks about the specific issues facing kids today, helping parents to more fully understand the challenges being faced. Yet Melissa and Sissy don't stop there. They focus in on nine values that are foundational for the character development of children: kindness, integrity, manners, compassion, forgiveness, responsibility, gratitude, patience and confidence. Each chapter is broken down into a section for children and adolescents, and specific ways to foster the specific value for the particular age. Modern Parents, Vintage Values offers parents timeless truths that can break through the chaos of today's culture and instill these truly vintage and important values in kids.

The Girl Who Wrote Loneliness A Novel written by Kyung-Sook Shin and has been published by Simon and Schuster this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2015-09-15 with Fiction categories.

The highly anticipated release of the most personal novel by Kyung-Sook Shin, who first burst on to the literary scene with the New York Times bestseller, Please Look After Mom. Homesick and alone, a teen-aged girl has just arrived in Seoul to work in a factory. Her family, still in the countryside, is too impoverished to keep sending her to school, so she works long, sun-less days on a stereo-assembly line, struggling through night school every evening in order to achieve her dream of becoming a writer. Korea’s brightest literary star sets this complex and nuanced coming-of-age story against the backdrop of Korea’s industrial sweatshops of the 1970’s and takes on the extreme exploitation, oppression, and urbanization that helped catapult Korea’s economy out of the ashes of war. But it was girls like Shin’s heroine who formed the bottom of Seoul’s rapidly changing social hierarchy, forgotten and ignored. Richly autobiographical, The Girl Who Wrote Loneliness lays bare the conflict and confusion Shin faces as she confronts her past and the sweeping social change of the past half-century. Cited in Korea as one of the most important literary novels of the decade, this novel cements Shin’s legacy as one of the most insightful and exciting writers of her generation.

Homeroom Security written by Aaron Kupchik and has been published by NYU Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2012-08-01 with Education categories.

Police officers, armed security guards, surveillance cameras, and metal detectors are common features of the disturbing new landscape at many of today's high schools. You will also find new and harsher disciplinary practices: zero-tolerance policies, random searches with drug-sniffing dogs, and mandatory suspensions, expulsions, and arrests, despite the fact that school crime and violence have been decreasing in the US for the past two decades. While most educators, students, and parents accept these harsh policing and punishment strategies based on the assumption that they keep children safe, Aaron Kupchik argues that we need to think more carefully about how we protect and punish students. In Homeroom Security, Kupchik shows that these policies lead schools to prioritize the rules instead of students, so that students' real problems--often the very reasons for their misbehaviour--get ignored. Based on years of impressive field research, Kupchik demonstrates that the policies we have zealously adopted in schools across the country are the opposite of the strategies that are known to successfully reduce student misbehaviour and violence. As a result, contemporary school discipline is often unhelpful, and can be hurtful to students in ways likely to make schools more violent places. Furthermore, those students who are most at-risk of problems in schools and dropping out are the ones who are most affected by these counterproductive policies. Schools and students can and should be safe, and Homeroom Security offers real strategies for making them so.

Volume 10, Therapeutic Consultations in Child Psychiatry, a posthumous publication of twenty-one case histories of children and adolescents taken over a ten-year period, is introduced by the Florentine analyst and child and adolescent psychiatrist, Marco Armellini. It concerns the application of psychoanalysis to child psychiatry. The technique in these reported cases usually takes the form of what Winnicott describes as the Squiggle Game. Winnicott states that what happens in the game and in the whole interview depends on the use made of the child's experience, including the material that presents itself. In these consultations, unlike what happens in ongoing intensive analytic cases, interpretation of the unconscious is not the main feature. The backbone of all the work described here is the theory of the emotional development of the individual.
