This report reflects the outcomes and findings of the International Association for Political Science Students(IAPSS) - UN75 Dialogue on Youth, Peace & Development in Africa hosted on the Saturday, 12 September 2020. Participants of the dialogue attended from various regions on the continent and represented both youth academia and civil society. The African Union has committed to “Silencing the Guns” in Africa by 2020, yet today millions of people on the continent still face the scourge of conflict, displacement and violence. A large portion of those affectedare young people who die on all sides, who have their livelihoods destroyed and their futures snatched away. On 14 July 2020 the United Nations Security Council unanimously adopted UNSC Resolution 2535 placing youth at the centre of peacebuilding and international security. The resolution explicitly identifies youth as a group in society that is “adversely affected by armed conflict” and highlights that “access to quality education and economic opportunities has a dramatic impact on durable peace and reconciliation.”The resolution goes further in reaffirming the responsibility of national governments and authorities in ensuring the meaningful participation of youth without discrimination of any kind in both development and peacebuilding. What has been highlighted by this dialogue and a changing discourse on African peace, is that there exists a two-way relationship between lasting peace and sustainable development on the continent. To achieve peace we need development, but to achieve development we need peace. This dilemma requires committed and sound leadership from the governments that citizens have entrusted with their prosperity and security, but it also requires the people of Africa to mobilise and exercise their agency as actors of change. The link between youth, peace and development is slowly finding its way onto the multilateral governance agenda, but lasting change will never come unless youth voice their support for tangible steps to be taken by the United Nations, the African Union and member state governments. This is most true in Africa, which will become the world's most youthful continent in the coming decades, promising either to bring about a new dawn or a generational crisis. This report is one attempt to bring youth voices to the forefront and elevate the priorities of young people in Africa. To do so this report has drawn on the responses and reflections that dialogue participants raised to key questions relating to peace and development in Africa. These have been used to show common trends anda common narrative that arose through the dialogue process. The frequency with which certain issues came up in participant responses was also used to determine which issues most young people regarded as having the greatest importance and urgency. Direct quotations from participant responses form a key part of this report, as its contents are not merely the theoretical musings of a few, but belong to each person who made their contribution to the conversation. As the international community reflects on the current state of the United Nations and the next 25 years ahead, it is pertinent, now more than ever, that the conversation on youth empowerment, inclusion and upliftment be placed centre stage. The IAPSS-UN75 Dialogue on Youth, Peace and Development in Africa Report seeks to consolidate and elevate the views of young people in Africa and make its contribution to building a better global agenda that can help deliver the future and the Africa we want.

In an interconnected and globalized world, the voices of the local communities struggle to make themselves heard on the international stage. But many issues that arise within international relations have consequences for ordinary lives and are therefore closely connected. Climate change, warfare and migration are all examples of this. They are often discussed in abstract terms with relation to international diplomacy, but threaten the actual livelihoods of small communities and ordinary people. This was the setting of the conference ‘Global Crisis, Local Voices’, held in May 2018. This journal is a compilation of the papers presented at that conference, which was the second ‘DEN International Student Conference’. The conference and this publication is one of the many projects that the Democratic Education Network (DEN) is responsible for since its launch in 2016. This book is a collection of diverse works, all written by student authors from a range of different universities. From Democracy and Ideology, to Climate Change and China, it covers numerous concepts, ideas and geographical regions, that are often found in the studies of Politics and International Relations. This book is the result of passion and hard work from all students involved in its production and it is a project that we in DEN are incredibly proud of and hope to continue in the future. “I encourage you to read these publications to catalyse views in you that stimulate great debate that helps you become part of the compassionate, progressive and responsible movement of young people that will help overcome injustices in the world and make the world a better place.” Dr Peter Bonfield OBE FREng Vice-Chancellor and President University of Westminster

The overarching aim of the book is to analyze and discuss the achievements and shortcomings of interventions in Africa by the International Criminal Court as well as to develop proposals for cooperation between international courts, domestic courts outside Africa and courts within Africa. While the outcomes of the tumultuous uprisings that continue to transfix the Arab world remain uncertain, the root causes of rebellion persist. Drawing upon extensive empirical research, Lineages of Revolt tracks the major shifts in the region’s political economy over recent decades. In this illuminating and original work, Adam Hanieh explores the contours of neoliberal policies, dynamics of class and state formation, imperialism and the nature of regional accumulation, the significance of Palestine and the Gulf Arab states, and the ramifications of the global economic crisis. By mapping the complex and contested nature of capitalism in the Middle East, the book demonstrates that a full understanding of the uprisings needs to go beyond a simple focus on “dictators and democracy.”

Adopted from an orphanage in Russia when he was two years old, Alex Gilbert tells us his story of what it was like growing up in a small town in New Zealand as an adopted child. This story starts in Arkhangelsk, Russia. The city where Alex was born. His birth mother unable to take care of him, decided to place him into an orphanage. Alex was adopted into his New Zealand family in 1994 when he was two years old. Unable to remember anything and with only his birth parents names on paper, Alex has always been determined to find his birth parents. It was a case of curiosity and wonder. With his New Zealand parents supporting him, Alex decided to do a search for them in 2013 with the help of social media. He was able to find his birth mother Tatiana and then eventually his birth father Mihail. They had both gone seperate ways before Alex was born. His birth mother never told Mihail of his existence. After a series of messages and Skype calls, Alex flew to Russia at the end of 2013, meeting them both for the first time. His story was told on New Zealand TV in 2014, helping Alex connect with others adopted in New Zealand who also came from the same orphanage as him in Arkhangelsk, Russia. This story follows Alex on his journey after he met his birth parents for the first time. Alex went to Russia again in 2015 to appear on Russia's 'Let them Talk' TV show and then again in 2017 to visit his orphanage in Arkhangelsk. He also was honored to meet Anna Kuznetsova, The Children's Rights Commissioner for the President of the Russian Federation while in Russia. With his own search for his birth parents, Alex created "I'm Adopted" which helps others around the world share their stories and reconnect using social media. Alex talks about how this project has expanded worldwide and how it has helped others also adopted connect with their birth parents.
