I'm M.C. McNellis. Thank you for taking the time to look at my collection! Growing up, I was one of those kids that asked a lot of questions about the world so, I ended up consuming countless issues of National Geographic Magazine, Eye Witness Books, and the World Book Encyclopedia. I read about lots of different subjects; rocks, glaciers, indigenous people, and my favorite - animals. To help me remember the facts and for the pure enjoyment of it, I frequently made little illustrated books out of scraps of paper that were held together by tape and staples about whatever creature was interesting me at the time. These hand-bound books I made as a child are not much different than my current work (although my language skills have improved and my renderings are much better). Although I've always enjoyed it, reading non-fiction can be a chore. The dry, academic style of writing can be uninteresting and difficult to absorb. This can be especially true for young people. However, when a fun cartoon/illustration pertinent to the narrative shows up it can be quite refreshing and makes a particular passage or chapter quite memorable. Aside from learning more about the world around me, this was and still is my favorite part of reading non-fiction. So, why not make an entire book like that?! This is exactly how I have been able to successfully combine my love of animals, artistic talent, sense of humor, and habit of using metaphor and analogies in a meaningful way. Each book outlines the behavior and characteristics of unique and extraordinary members of the animal kingdom with (mostly) encyclopedic style text and colorful illustrations. Either the text or illustration (sometimes simultaneously) contain metaphorical devices (including puns) to make facts more accessible and entertaining for young readers. These books can be a fun way to introduce students (or adults) to reference material. Please visit www.KiwiSimile.com for more information.

As non-native English speakers, we would probably find it difficult to understand even the most common idioms. We should understand the form of each idiomatic expression before we can use it correctly in a sentence, besides knowing its meaning. In this book, the list of 99 common idioms is in alphabetical order under each chapter that shows its category. Each idiom comes with its meaning and its form (verb, noun, adjective, adverb, or respective phrase) to ease understanding on how to use it as part of a complete sentence. This book attempts to provide an analogy to help us remember the meaning accordingly. Each comic strip illustrates an example for each idiom in terms of how we can use it in spoken English. It also attempts to reflect directly its figurative or literal meaning; or even both literal and figurative meanings in some cartoon illustrations. Hence, this book aims to make readers fall in love with idioms when learning them in easy and fun way through cartoon illustrations. Dr Shahida Sulaiman together with cartoonist ASAK and Dr Zarina Mustafa who specialises in English field, form a great team to make this book worthwhile to all readers.

p.The English language contains a great store of idioms that can be used in creative and forceful ways. Dictionary of Idioms examines over 400 such phrases, tracing each one's source and history through a rich supply of examples. New entries in the revised edition include 'play fast and loose' (from a 16th-century fairground game), 'head over heels' (a totally illogical variation on the more sensible 'heels over head') and 'knee-high to a grasshopper' (which won out over knee-high to a mosquito and knee-high to a toad). Mini-essays scattered through the book expand on such broader themes as What is an idiom? National Rivalries and The Old Curiosity Shop of Linguistics. Linda and Roger Flavell combine scholarly accuracy with an unfailing understanding of the snippets of information that intrigue the browser.
