Mobility and displacement are major characteristics of contemporary societies. These population shifts are far from fluid, homogeneous or linear, but are, instead, interspersed with a range of longer or shorter periods of waiting. Whether these intervals are technically, administratively or politically motivated, they are often understood in spatial terms: waiting societies have a territorial dimension. This volume examines and assesses the many forms that waiting territories take, in order to better understand their various juridical statuses, their relationships with their spatial environment and specific forms of temporality, and the various economic and social relationships which they foster. The contributions primarily focus on the Americas because this continent is the product of the (voluntary or forced) displacement of various population groups that have themselves left their mark on the territories which they have appropriated. The book is divided into five parts. Part I, “The Genealogy and Stakes of Waiting Situations”, presents waiting as a state of mobility; Part II, ‘”When Waiting Defines a Territory”, focuses on the spatial implications of situations of waiting; Part III, “Social Practices and Spatial Dynamics in Waiting Territories”, explores the ways in which people inhabit waiting territories; Part IV, “Waiting Territories and the Challenges to Identity”, examines the mutations of identity in situations of waiting; and Part V, “The Memory, Heritage, and Curation of Waiting Territories”, looks at the way in which waiting territories can become the focus of heritage practices and the politics of memory.

In June 2004, the jury of the VI Bienal de Fotoperiodismo gave a prize to the work "Mexicaltzingo comunidad en rebeldía" by Giorgio Viera. One of the photographs contained in the essay "Alma en la azotea" generated an intense polemic as by many it was considered plagiarism, posed and therefore false. Others considered that its transcendence and expressive force could not be judged as false or true. The debate made evident the urgency to clarify the meaning of truth, credibility or reality when talking about images and their relation with ethics. The catalogue of the biennial integrated a series of texts related to this old problem. This anthology includes some of those articles.

Los trabajos que conforman este libro responden a dos inquietudes relacionales: por un lado, ampliar los diálogos y debates existentes acerca de la visión y la visualidad, como también acerca de desplazamientos, tránsitos, transiciones empíricas y simbólicas de sujetos, objetos y saberes, tanto históricos como contemporáneos. Ello deriva en enfoques que van desde la literatura, la filosofía, la historia, la etnografía, la estética, a los estudios visuales y la antropología del cuerpo. La otra inquietud relacional transpone los límites de una reflexión únicamente académica, entendiendo que la legitimidad de un discurso acerca de estas problemáticas debe ser pensada también con la participación de productores de imágenes, quienes hacen uso de las tecnologías visuales fotógrafos, cineastas, antropólogos visuales, que tienen en el viaje o en el desplazamiento una forma de producción o un objeto en construcción. Son quienes construyen un relato, en ocasiones también recurriendo a archivos o a otras imágenes sobre las que se sedimentan las propias, con un discurso diferente e igualmente legítimo respecto del científico. Así, las prácticas de movilidad y desplazamiento construyen un mundo-objeto-sujeto que el analista indaga, pero también esas prácticas lo van construyendo como sujeto sensible en la experiencia de investigación o en la experiencia estética.

Buscando hacer frente a este contexto desde la atalaya bibliotecológica es que el Seminario Pensamiento Teórico Bibliotecológico pretende dirimir la posición de esta ciencia frente al momento presente, marcado por la multiformidad de expresiones emergentes de hibridación informacional, cuya trama paradigmática es el diálogo entre palabra e imagen. Este diálogo es motivo de otro diálogo como el que los miembros del Seminario buscan entablar con especialistas de diversas áreas para intercambiar ideas y visiones que permitan un conocimiento mutuo más amplio de la temática que nos convoca. Esta reflexión además se enmarca en una de las vertientes del proyecto definitorio del Seminario Pensamiento Teórico Bibliotecológico: llevar a cabo la construcción epistemológica de objetos y prácticas del campo bibliotecológico desde los fundamentos de esta ciencia (la otra vertiente es el estudio y la difusión de los clásicos del pensamiento teórico de la Bibliotecología). Para ello, el seminario desde su fundación ha venido desarrollando una actividad reflexiva teórica en torno a la imagen y la lectura de imagen para sacarlos de su estatuto de objetos periféricos de conocimiento y con ello establecerlos como objetos integrados dentro del campo bibliotecológico. Esta edición en particular muestra la atención prestada al movimiento, a la orientación que la información visual sigue actualmente en sus vertiginosas y multiformes variantes, con lo que se busca contribuir para que a su vez la Bibliotecología vislumbre su camino futuro.
