ÿ The experience of the divine has been referred to by many artists over the centuries, whether their subject was the human figure, landscape, still life or indeed religious or biblical themes. Art therefore requires a kind of openness; a willingness to mediate rather than to control. This sensitivity can best be described as humility, an obeisance to something we are part of. Therefore, to 'see' the 'unseen' in visual arts brings about awe and requires 'iconic viewing'. The spiritual realm, as portrayed by icons, has a healing quality in a world where the news and the arts are so full of tragedy and where the church's message so often sounds escapist or na‹ve.

Byzantine and Russian Orthodox icons are perhaps the most enduring form of religious art ever developed--and one of the most mysterious. This book provides an accessible guide to their story and power. Illustrated mostly with Cretan, Greek, and Russian examples from the British Museum, which houses Britain's most important collection, the book examines icons in the context of the history of Christianity, as well as within the perspective of art history.

The Byzantines surrounded themselves with their saints, invisible but constant companions, who were made visible by dreams, visions, and art. The composition and presentation of this imagined gallery followed a logical structure, a construct that was itself a collective work of art created by Byzantine society. The purpose of this book is to analyze the logic of the saint's image in Byzantium, both in portraits and in narrative scenes. Here Henry Maguire argues that the Byzantines gave to their images differing formal characteristics of movement, modeling, depth, and differentiation, according to the tasks that the icons were called upon to perform in the all-important business of communication between the visible and the invisible worlds. The book draws extensively on sources that have been relatively little utilized by art historians. It considers both domestic and ecclesiastical artifacts, showing how the former raised the problem of access by lay men and women to the supernatural and fueled the debates concerning the role of images in the Christian cult. Special attention is paid to the poems inscribed by the Byzantines upon their icons, and to the written lives of their saints, texts that offer the most direct and vivid insight into the everyday experience of art in Byzantium. The overall purpose of the book is to provide a new view of Byzantine art, one that integrates formal analysis with both theology and social history.

Ever wonder if the characters you see on TV, in movies and in comic books are hiding something behind their masks? That perhaps they're really someone -- or something -- else? When pop culture is such a huge part of our lives, we're bombarded with these characters everywhere we turn. Each time we see a new character in a movie, video game or commercial, we feel a sudden sense deja vu. There's something about their goofy grin, that creepy laugh, or those boogly eyes that feels eerily familiar...This got me thinking. Is anything we see ever 100% original? Or is everything we experience really just our minds piecing together past experiences to create something that feels unique and new?In Icons Unmasked, I'm trying to bring a new sense of discovery to characters everyone has seen hundreds of times. I wanted to recreate the experience of what it might be like to see one iconic character from your childhood for the first time as an adult. Proceed at your own caution and keep in mind the following illustrations cannot be unseen. Your childhood might possibly be destroyed forever

After seeing the dark side of humanity, Greyson leaves the military for a more peaceful and settled life—or so he thought. After a divorce, the ball starts rolling. It has been said “hell hath no fury like a woman scorned,” and Greyson finds this to be true. Even though he is worldly and traveled, Greyson begins to realize his own naiveté. At first, he doesn’t believe the things he is told, until he experiences them first hand. Witchcraft is strong in Texas, and this unseen world of secrets comes with consequences. The practice of black magic makes Greyson question the bounds of human perception. As he travels down a road of betrayal and curses, his life becomes a shade darker. Looking for some way to combat witchcraft, he searches for anything that may allow him protection and rid him of conjured unholy creatures. Finally acquiring a talisman for this purpose, Greyson learns that when fighting demons, there is always collateral damage.
