Resumen: este trabajo centra su atención en la arquitectura moderna venezolana que procede fundamentalmente del campo cultural académico, especialmente en el período de 1941-1958. En segundo orden y como paradigma de lo que podría significar el énfasis en la representatividad nacional dentro de la arquitectura, profundiza en el estudio de los pabellones venezolanos en diversas exposiciones internacionales entre 1893 y 1992. En tercer lugar explora el espacio ocupado por el pensamiento sobre la arquitectura venezolana en el discurso elaborado por arquitectos, críticos e historiadores, así como el énfasis que, en algunos casos, se ha hecho en torno a la delimitación, alcance y manifestaciones de la identidad.

La justificación salta a la vista: si la identidad nacional es el gran relato que engloba a una comunidad humana, urge reflexionar sobre la identidad venezolana, polarizada y escindida, así como sobre sus posibilidades de rearticulación democrática dentro del pluralismo y la diversidad.

Las caricaturas editoriales de los diarios de circulacion nacional y mayor tradicion en Venezuela constituyen un discurso que perfila el acervo simbolico y acciones de los venezolanos en torno a la democracia puesto que representan la vision que las instituciones de la verdad tienen sobre este proceso politico que rige los tejidos de la republica. Asimismo, este discurso asienta los valores culturales que perfilan el imaginario colectivo de una nacion en cuanto a su identidad. En esta investigacion, que comprende el analisis de las representaciones que del venezolano se hicieran en los periodos electorales de 1958-1998, se decanta lo producido y divulgado durante 40 anos por los principales diarios: un estereotipo del ciudadano que determina la percepcion popular de la democracia; un sistema de elites que procuran su propio beneficio. Bajo esta ideologia se valora y plantea el funcionamiento de la democracia no como gestion del Estado, sino como el mecanismo para acceder al bienestar. Se establecen asi dos tipos de ciudadano: el soberano -el miserable- y el politico -el rico-. Entre ambos, queda un terreno fertil para implantar un discurso y una ideologia politica: el populismo."

Female Citizens, Patriarchs, and the Law in Venezuela examines the effects that liberalism had on gender relations in the process of state formation in Caracas from the late eighteenth to the nineteenth century. The 1811 Venezuelan constitution granted everyone in the abstract, including women, the right to be citizens and equals, but at the same time permitted the continued use of older Spanish civil laws that accorded women inferior status and granted greater authority to male heads of households. Invoking citizenship for their own protection and that of their loved ones, some women went to court to claim the same civil liberties and protections granted to male citizens. In the late eighteenth century, colonial courts dispensed some protection to women in their conflicts with men; a century later, however, patriarchal prerogatives were reaffirmed in court sentences. Discouraging as this setback was, the actions of the women who had fought these legal battles raised an awareness of the discrepancies between the law and women?s daily lives, laying the groundwork for Venezuelan women?s organizations in the twentieth century. Drawing on a wealth of primary sources, historian Arlene D�az shows how the struggle for political power in the modern state reinforced and reproduced patriarchal authority. She also reveals how Venezuelan women from different classes, in public and private, coped strategically with their paradoxical status as equal citizens who nonetheless lacked power because of their gender. Shedding light on a fundamental but little examined dimension of modern nation building, Female Citizens, Patriarchs, and the Law in Venezuela gives voice to historic Venezuelan women while offering a detailed look at a society making the awkward transition from the colonial world to a modern one.
