Nos encontramos ante una historia amena donde lo histórico y lo simbólico se entrelazan, contada en un lenguaje accesible y literario que recuerda por momentos a obras de la literatura americana. Su lectura es por tanto recomendada tanto para estudiosos de la antropología como para lectores que quieran iniciarse en este campo y especialmente para quienes deseen comprender el importante papel de las mujeres en la historia de los pueblos amerindios. La autora aclara que no pretende escribir una historia del pueblo miskitu, sino más bien realizar una relectura histórica de aquellos momentos más significativos del pasado del grupo como, por ejemplo, su etnogénesis; el establecimiento y la consolidación del reino; las incursiones armadas y la toma de cautivas; las relaciones comerciales; los líderes zambos e indios y su defensa de un "estilo de vida inglés"; el intento de colonización español; el ocaso y desintegración del reino miskitu y las consecuencias de la conversión religiosa para la identidad social del grupo. La autora abarca estos temas con una perspectiva de construcción social, haciendo énfasis en cómo el proceso de hibridación racial y cultural, que en el siglo XVII da orígen al grupo, y que se ve acompañado por la adquisición de objetos materiales que ocasionan cambios en el ámbito tradicional, tiene continuidad en el tiempo. El argumento principal del libro es precisamente ese: que la miskitu es, desde sus orígenes, una sociedad abierta al exterior cuya cultura es construida y reconstruida por medio de cambios profundamente influenciados por las sucesivas interacciones con el "otro", por sus ideas y sus prácticas.
