This study investigated the changes in the spatial distribution of lodgepole pine stands as regeneration proceeds. Data were collected from 29 plots established in regenerating lodgepole pine stands and remeasured two years later. Nine of these plots had sufficient ingrowth to warrant an analysis of their spatial distribution dynamics. Ripley's K(t) statistic was used to identify the spatial pattern of the trees at the initial measurement, the ingrowth trees, and the combined initial and ingrowth trees. The K(t) statistic was also employed to detect correlation between the locations of the initial and the ingrowth trees. The spatial patterns were modelled by a Poisson cluster process, a Poisson process, or a Markov point process when the trees were aggregated, random, or regularly distributed, respectively.

Describes a study that identified and modelled the spatial pattern of trees in lodgepole pine sites in two biogeoclimatic variants in British Columbia. The K(t) statistic was used to detect the patterns and provide a basis for determining an appropriate spatial process model. Most sites had an aggregated pattern which was modelled effectively by a Poisson cluster process. An equation describing the relationship between the parameters of the Poisson cluster process model was developed. Random patterns occurring in the plots were modelled by a Poisson process and regular patterns by a Markov point process and a lattice-based process. The appendix contains the algorithm for the processes used.

Recent work in model systems has demonstrated significant effects of rapid evolutionary change on ecological processes (eco-evolutionary dynamics). However, few studies have addressed whether eco-evolutionary dynamics structure natural ecosystems. I investigated landscape scale variation in the frequency of serotiny in Rocky Mountain lodgepole pine ( Pinus contorta subsp. latifolia ), a widespread species in which postfire seedling density and ecosystem structure are largely determined by serotiny. Serotiny, the retention of mature seeds in cones in a canopy seed bank, is a heritable trait that is an adaptation to stand-replacing fire. Less attention has been paid to the potential selective effects of seed predation on serotiny. For lodgepole pine, seed losses due to pre-dispersal seed predation by the American red squirrel (Tamiasciurus hudsonicus ) can be extreme. Furthermore, serotinous cones are more exposed to pre-dispersal predation than non-serotinous cones, suggesting the potential for selection against serotiny. I hypothesized that spatial variation in serotiny in lodgepole pine forests results from variation in conflicting directional selection from fire and seed predation. I present data from the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem showing that serotiny is uncommon where fire return intervals are long (ca. 280-310 years) but is of variable frequency where fire return intervals are shorter (ca. 135-185 years), and that much of this variance is explained by variation in the intensity of seed predation. I also show that seed predation rates of serotinous cones are higher than those of non-serotinous cones, indicating selection against serotiny from seed predators. Finally, I use simulation modeling to show that the predation rates I report exert strong selection against serotiny and could produce the patterns observed in the field. These results suggest that contemporary patterns in serotiny reflect evolution in response to conflicting selection pressures from fire and seed predation. Consequently, spatial patterns in ecosystem structure and function in lodgepole pine forests likely result from an eco-evolutionary dynamic driven by spatial variation in two opposing selective forces.

"The recent mountain-pine beetle outbreak in the Central Interior of British Columbia is leaving unsalvaged stands with minimal silvicultural treatment, raising questions about their ability to regenerate and the implications of this uncertainty to future timber supply and habitat values. No system currently exists to predict, on a landscape level, which pine stands will have adequate stocking of advance regeneration suitable for release upon canopy death. My research takes a ground-truthed, landscape-level approach to modelling, predicting, mapping, and prioritizing stands for salvage or rehabilitation. The resulting model, derived from recursive partitioning of data from 964 sample plots, created a landscape level output with a predictive accuracy of 78%. Across the Sub-Boreal Spruce study area, I estimate that 58% of mature pine-leading stands (approximately 840,000 ha) are likely or very likely to be stocked with at least 600 stems/ha of living understory trees."--Leaf ii.

Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences was first conceived, published, and disseminated by the Center for Information and Numerical Data Analysis and Synthesis (CINDAS)* at Purdue University in 1957, starting its coverage of theses with the academic year 1955. Beginning with Volume 13, the printing and dis semination phases of the activity were transferred to University Microfilms/Xerox of Ann Arbor, Michigan, with the though that such an arrangement would be more beneficial to the academic and general scientific and technical community. After five years of this joint undertaking we had concluded that it was in the interest of all concerned if the printing and distribution of the volumes were handled by an international publishing house to assure improved service and broader dissemi nation. Hence, starting with Volume 18, Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences has been disseminated on a worldwide basis by Plenum Publishing Corporation of New York, and in the same year the coverage was broadened to include Canadian universities. All back issues can also be ordered from Plenum. We have reported in Volume 37 (thesis year 1992) a total of 12,549 thesis titles from 25 Canadian and 153 United States universities. We are sure that this broader base for these titles reported will greatly enhance the value of this impor tant annual reference work. While Volume 37 reports theses submitted in 1992, on occasion, certain uni versities do report theses submitted in previous years but not reported at the time.
