This book brings together a team of international scholars to attempt to understand David Hume’s conception of the self. The standard interpretation is that he holds a no-self view: we are just bundles of conscious experiences, thoughts and emotions. There is nothing deeper to us, no core, no essence, no soul. In the Appendix to A Treatise of Human Nature, though, Hume admits to being dissatisfied with such an account and Part One of this book explores why this might be so. Part Two turns to Books 2 and 3 of the Treatise, where Hume moves away from the ‘fiction’ of a simple self, to the complex idea we have of our flesh and blood selves, those with emotional lives, practical goals, and social relations with others. In Part Three connections are traced between Hume and Madhyamaka Buddhism, Husserl and the phenomenological tradition, and contemporary cognitive science.

Ruth Boeker offers a new perspective on Locke's account of persons and personal identity by considering it within the context of his broader philosophical project and the philosophical debates of his day. Her interpretation emphasizes the importance of the moral and religious dimensions of his view. By taking seriously Locke's general approach to questions of identity, Boeker shows that we should consider his account of personhood separately from his account of personal identity over time. On this basis, she argues that Locke endorses a moral account of personhood, according to which persons are subjects of accountability, and that his particular thinking about moral accountability explains why he regards sameness of consciousness as necessary for personal identity over time. In contrast to some neo-Lockean views about personal identity, Boeker argues that Locke's account of personal identity is not psychological per se, but rather his underlying moral, religious, metaphysical, and epistemic background beliefs are relevant for understanding why he argues for a consciousness-based account of personal identity. Taking his underlying background beliefs into consideration not only sheds light on why many of his early critics do not adopt Locke's view, but also shows why his view cannot be as easily dismissed as some of his critics assume.

Human faces are unique biological structures that convey a complex variety of important social messages. Three empirical studies are presented that suggest that the benefits to psychological well-being of a positive group identity is not just the result of the strength of importance a group identity is to self but extends to other elements of a group identity such as narrative beliefs about the ingroup. Overall, these findings highlight the multidimensional complexity of group identity within individuals and its relationship to perceptions of group and personal discrimination and its consequences for subjective well-being. Together, findings from the three empirical studies suggest that one's psychological association with a stigmatized group identity could make individuals more vigilant for discrimination and at the same time may provide benefits for the subjective well-being of group members. Distinctively, beliefs associated with the ingroup reflecting a content and meaning dimension of group identity may also be related to how discrimination is perceived and how it is subjectively experienced.
