This comprehensive book focuses on the challenges facing Ukraine as a newly emerged state after the collapse of the Soviet Union. Like all countries with no recent history of independence, Ukraine had to invent or recreate effective political institutions, reintroduce a market economy, and reorient its foreign policy. These tasks were impossible to accomplish without resolving the question of national identity. In this balanced and clear-eyed assessment, a team of U.S. and Ukrainian specialists explores the external and internal dimensions of national identity and statehood, providing a wealth of information previously unavailable to Western scholars. Arguing that the search for national identity is a multidimensional process, the authors show that it reflects the realities of the dawning twenty-first century. Paradoxically, this quest must cope with the both the weakening of state boundaries caused by globalization and the strengthening of the national model as new countries emerge from the disintegration of the Soviet Union and Yugoslavia. After providing the historical context of Ukraine's international debut, the book analyzes the complexities of constructing a national identity. This book examines the relationship between national identity construction and current foreign policy discourses on Russia in selected European Union member states in 2014–2018. It shows that divergent national discourses on Russia derive from the different ways in which the country was constructed in national identity. The book develops an interpretive theoretical framework and argues that policy makers’ agency can profoundly influence the contestation between different identity narratives. It includes case studies in policy areas that are of primary importance for EU–Russia relations, such as energy security (the Nord Stream 2 controversy), the Ukraine crisis and Russia’s military intervention in Syria. Focusing on EU member states that have traditionally taken different stances vis-à-vis Russia (Germany, Poland and Finland), it shows that at the peak of the Ukraine crisis national discourses converged towards a pragmatic, but critical narrative. As the Ukraine crisis subsided and new events took centre stage in foreign policy discussions (i.e. the Syrian civil war, international terrorism), long-standing and identity-based divergences partly re-emerged in the discourses of policy makers. This became particularly evident during the Nord Stream 2 controversy. Deep-rooted and different perceptions of the Russian Other in EU member states are still influential and lead to divergent national agendas for foreign policy towards Russia. This book will be of interest to students and scholars working in European and EU politics, Russian and Soviet politics, and International Relations.

State-society-identity relations could be defined as interaction(s) between state institutions, societal groups and individuals living within the borders of a (political) community/ state. These relations are never static, but vibrant, being in constant transition under the influence of cultural, religious and other developmental processes happening in individual and in society. Within the democratic structures the relation between state, society and individual is more open-minded placing the protection of citizens, preservation of citizens' rights, freedoms, and responsibilities as a departing point of dialogue taking in the perspective of the citizens' cultural, religious, and ethnic affiliations and backgrounds. Within totalitarian structures this relation is hindered and is not fully developed. The present publication addresses the transition in religion-state-societyidentity relations in Ukraine within the three-dimensional approach focusing on transdisciplinary perspectives on (1) political protests, (2) civil movements and/ or (3) revolution of dignity. Can the current events in Ukraine be defined mainly as political protests, i.e. a transition in state structure? Or more as civil movements, i.e. transition in society? Or is it a revolution of dignity, i.e. a transition in/of religion? An international group of researchers and experts from universities in Australia, Belgium, Canada, France, Germany, The Netherlands, New Zealand, Poland, Russia, Ukraine, United Kingdom, and the United States of America have offered their perspective on the events in Ukraine in attempting to equip the reader with a glimpse of understanding of what happens in Ukraine and what consequences could be expected. Before the USSR collapsed, ethnic identities were imposed by the state. This book analyzes how and why Jews decided what being Jewish meant to them after the state dissolved and describes the historical evolution of Jewish identities. Surveys of more than 6,000 Jews in the early and late 1990s reveal that Russian and Ukrainian Jews have a deep sense of their Jewishness but are uncertain what it means. They see little connection between Judaism and being Jewish. Their attitudes toward Judaism, intermarriage and Jewish nationhood differ dramatically from those of Jews elsewhere. Many think Jews can believe in Christianity and do not condemn marrying non-Jews. This complicates their connections with other Jews, resettlement in Israel, the United States and Germany, and the rebuilding of public Jewish life in Russia and Ukraine. Post-Communist Jews, especially the young, are transforming religious-based practices into ethnic traditions and increasingly manifesting their Jewishness in public.
