Vanishing America written by James Conaway and has been published by Catapult this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2008-10-10 with Nature categories.

A mixture of travelogue and personal narrative, James Conaway's smart, informative essays offer an insightful depiction of his journeys between Washington, D.C., and Big Sur, California, as he tries to understand what has become of the places, people, and traditions that were once so precious but have now been irreparably changed. Incorporating the voices of cowboys, real estate agents, activists, and many others, he raises vital questions about the merits of sprawling development and the ever–increasing use of resources in the name of "progress." He urges us to consider the value of preservation in our growth–driven culture, as well as the ramifications of prosperity on the places important to our national identity.

Vanishing paradise" offers a fresh take on the modernist primitivism of the French painter Paul Gauguin, the exoticism of the American John LaFarge, and the elite tourism of the American writer Henry Adams. Literature And The Child written by James Holt McGavran and has been published by University of Iowa Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1998-04 with Literary Criticism categories.

The Romantic myth of childhood as a transhistorical holy time of innocence and spirituality, uncorrupted by the adult world, has been subjected in recent years to increasingly serious interrogation. Was there ever really a time when mythic ideals were simple, pure, and uncomplicated? The contributors to this book contend—although in widely differing ways and not always approvingly—that our culture is indeed still pervaded, in this postmodern moment of the very late twentieth century, by the Romantic conception of childhood which first emerged two hundred years ago. In the wake of the French Revolution and the Industrial Revolution, western Europe experienced another fin de siècle characterized by overwhelming material and institutional change and instability. By historicizing the specific political, social, and economic conflicts at work within the notion of Romantic childhood, the essayists in Literature and the Child show us how little these forces have changed over time and how enriching and empowering they can still be for children and their parents. In the first section, “Romanticism Continued and Contested,” Alan Richardson and Mitzi Myers question the origins and ends of Romantic childhood. In “Romantic Ironies, Postmodern Texts,” Dieter Petzold, Richard Flynn, and James McGavran argue that postmodern texts for both children and adults perpetuate the Romantic complexities of childhood. Next, in “The Commerce of Children's Books,” Anne Lundin and Paula Connolly study the production and marketing of children's classics. Finally, in “Romantic Ideas in Cultural Confrontations,” William Scheick and Teya Rosenberg investigate interactions of Romantic myths with those of other cultural systems.

It is unwise to steal from goblins... In order to save a dying silver kitten, a kind-hearted sprite makes a desperate decision. It is a choice that will change her life forever. Because all debts come due eventually, and a debt to the Goblin King is no small thing. Caught up in an age-old enmity, can Lumina find a way to make good what she owes and still keep all she holds dear? Will the price of her choice be more than she can pay? No matter the answer, some things are worth the cost, whatever it might be. At its heart, Lumina and the Goblin King is a fairytale - complete with goblins, fairies, elementals and the like - plus one opinionated silver cat. There is no obscene language or mature scenes; although there are some mild thematic elements.

TO ESCAPE PURSUIT, SHE TOOK ON ANOTHER'S IDENTITY¾ AND FOUND HERSELF MARKED FOR DEATH! Maris's work with the local underworld on the huge space station was anything but honest, but life was much more pleasant than it had been before the gang's leader had picked her up from the slums. Then her boss grabbed a visitor to the station who was asking too many questions, only to find out that she was a very important diplomat. Worse, his prisoner had apparently committed suicide by jumping through an airlock into hard vacuum. To avoid dangerous questions from station security, he decided to let Maris's corpse be found with the diplomat's IDs; but Maris saw through his plot and used those IDs to escape to the planet the Diplomat was about to investigate. Unfortunatley she landed in a hornet's nest of corrupt officials conspiring with a local tyrant. Surrounded by people who wanted her eliminated, the only person she could trust was Gabrel, a young officer who set off with her on a cross-planet trek to get evidence that would expose the tangled web of corruption. Maris was strongly attracted to Gabrel and the feeling seemed to be mutual. But then, he thought she was a high-ranking government agent. What would happen when he found that she was only a petty criminal on the run At the publisher's request, this title is sold without DRM (Digital Rights Management).
