Die antike Idyllik impliziert ein triadisches Modell einer idealisierten Vergangenheit, einer defizitären Gegenwart und einer perfektiblen Utopie. In der ästhetischen Theorie und Praxis hat dieses topische Denkbild eine fast beispiellose Wirkung entfaltet. Anhand von kanonischen Zeugnissen der europäischen Kulturtradition stellen die Beiträgerinnen und Beiträger des Bandes seine Filiationen in der Text- und Bildwelt zwischen Hellenismus und Postmoderne vor und schließen damit eine Forschungslücke. Ohne den Rekurs auf die Antike und die gattungstheoretischen Diskussionen der Aufklärung und Romantik sind selbst die Antiidyllik oder die Definition des Genres als ,forma non grata‘ im 20. Jahrhundert nicht konkretisierbar. Das macht nicht zuletzt die Vielfalt der mit der Idylle und dem ‚Idyllischen‘ verbundenen philosophischen, ästhetischen, anthropologischen, historischen, theologischen sowie wissenschaftsgeschichtlichen Fragestellungen deutlich. Das Denkbild einer unentfremdeten, natürlichen Existenz erweist sich als konstante und transkulturelle Kategorie, die in ihrer Tendenz zur Teleologie, zur kausalen Geschlossenheit und zur Reduktion von Komplexität als kognitive Strategie der Existenzbewältigung anzusehen ist.

Women and Early Modern Cultures of Translation: Beyond the Female Tradition is a major new intervention in research on early modern translation and will be an essential point of reference for anyone interested in the history of women translators. Research on women translators has often focused on early modern England; the example of early modern England has been taken as the norm for the rest of the continent and has shaped research on gender and translation more generally. This book brings a new European perspective to the field by introducing the case of Germany. It draws attention to forty women who can be identified as translators in sixteenth- and seventeenth-century Germany and shows how their work does not fit easily into traditional narratives about marginalization and subversiveness. The study uses the example of Germany to argue against reading the work of translating women primarily through the lens of gender and to challenge claims about the existence of a female translation tradition which transcends the boundaries of time and place. Broadening our perspective to include Germany provides a more nuanced and informed account of the position of women within European translation cultures and forces us to rethink gender as a category of analysis in translation history. The book makes the case for a new 'woman-interrogated' approach to translation history (to borrow a concept from Carol Maier) and as such it will provide a blueprint for future work in the area.

There is a prehistory of the adultery novel, which became a pan-European literary paradigm in the second half of the 19th century. In the wake of the French Revolution, secular marriage legislation emerges, producing a metaphorical surplus that is still effective today. Using legal history and canonical literary texts from Rousseau to Goethe and Manzoni to Hugo and Flaubert, this book traces how marriage around 1800 became a figure of reflection for the modern nation-state. In the process, original contributions to the philology of the individual texts emerge. At the same time, law and literature are made fruitful for a historical semantics of society and community. This book is a translation of an original German 1st edition “Ehe als Nationalfiktion” by Dagmar Stöferle, published by J.B.
