This concise text treats logic as a tool, “generated so that half the work involved in thinking is done for you by somebody else (the rules and laws of the logic).” Gabbay explains in a clear and careful manner how formal features of, and formal relations between, ordinary declarative sentences are captured by the systems of propositional and predicate logic.

The Handbook Of Rationality written by Markus Knauff and has been published by MIT Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2021-12-14 with Psychology categories.

The first reference on rationality that integrates accounts from psychology and philosophy, covering descriptive and normative theories from both disciplines. Both analytic philosophy and cognitive psychology have made dramatic advances in understanding rationality, but there has been little interaction between the disciplines. This volume offers the first integrated overview of the state of the art in the psychology and philosophy of rationality. Written by leading experts from both disciplines, The Handbook of Rationality covers the main normative and descriptive theories of rationality—how people ought to think, how they actually think, and why we often deviate from what we can call rational. It also offers insights from other fields such as artificial intelligence, economics, the social sciences, and cognitive neuroscience. The Handbook proposes a novel classification system for researchers in human rationality, and it creates new connections between rationality research in philosophy, psychology, and other disciplines. Following the basic distinction between theoretical and practical rationality, the book first considers the theoretical side, including normative and descriptive theories of logical, probabilistic, causal, and defeasible reasoning. It then turns to the practical side, discussing topics such as decision making, bounded rationality, game theory, deontic and legal reasoning, and the relation between rationality and morality. Finally, it covers topics that arise in both theoretical and practical rationality, including visual and spatial thinking, scientific rationality, how children learn to reason rationally, and the connection between intelligence and rationality.

Knowledge And Demonstration written by Orna Harari and has been published by Springer Science & Business Media this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2005-02-15 with Philosophy categories.

This study explores the theoretical relationship between Aristotle’s theory of syllogism and his conception of demonstrative knowledge. More specifically, I consider why Aristotle’s theory of demonstration presupposes his theory of syllogism. In reconsidering the relationship between Aristotle’s two Analytics, I modify this widely discussed question. The problem of the relationship between Aristotle’s logic and his theory of proof is commonly approached from the standpoint of whether the theory of demonstration presupposes the theory of syllogism. By contrast, I assume the theoretical relationship between these two theories from the start. This assumption is based on much explicit textual evidence indicating that Aristotle considers the theory of demonstration a branch of the theory of syllogism. I see no textual reasons for doubting the theoretical relationship between Aristotle’s two Analytics so I attempt to uncover here the common theoretical assumptions that relate the syllogistic form of reasoning to the cognitive state (i. e. , knowledge), which is attained through syllogistic inferences. This modification of the traditional approach reflects the wider objective of this essay. Unlike the traditional interpretation, which views the Posterior Analytics in light of scientific practice, this study aims to lay the foundation for a comprehensive interpretation of the Posterior Analytics, considering this work from a metaphysical perspective. One of my major assertions is that Aristotle’s conception of substance is essential for a grasp of his theory of demonstration in general, and of the role of syllogistic logic in particular.

'After a lifetime of dabbling in philosophy without tackling logic, I bought a couple of books on the subject and was soon totally lost. This book saved me.' - Amazon 5 star review ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ 'Unlike so many logic books, this one is easy to follow, step by step. Strongly recommended for beginners.' - Amazon 5 star review ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ When you see black clouds looming and predict it's going to rain, you're using logic. When you decide that all swans are white because all the swans you've seen are white, that's logic too (even though the conclusion is false). As humans we want to understand how things are connected and why, so that we can derive things we don''t know yet from what we do. Logic studies the methods and principles to distinguish good and bad reasoning. This book introduces three basic logical systems: categorical logic, propositional logic and predicate logic. It identifies in each system essential methods to test arguments, and there are illustrations and exercises to enhance your mastery of these skills. By the time you finish you will understand what logicians were thinking when they designed logical systems and start to think like them. Whether you are preparing for an essay, studying for an exam or simply want to expand your knowledge, Logic: A Complete Introduction is your go-to guide. ABOUT THE SERIES The Complete Introduction series from Teach Yourself is the ultimate one-stop guide for anyone wanting a comprehensive and accessible entry point into subjects as diverse as philosophy, mathematics, psychology, Shakespeare and practical electronics. Metaphysics written by Aristotle and has been published by DigiCat this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2022-11-13 with Philosophy categories.

Aristotle's "Metaphysics" stands as a cornerstone of Western philosophy, exploring foundational questions about existence, reality, and the nature of being. In this profound work, Aristotle delves into topics such as substance, causality, potentiality, and actuality, employing a rigorous and systematic approach that reflects his empirical mindset. Written in a dialectical style, the text challenges readers to engage with abstract concepts and provides a critical framework that has influenced countless philosophical discussions throughout history, including those in theology, science, and ethics. Aristotle, a student of Plato and tutor to Alexander the Great, sought to establish a comprehensive understanding of the world and our place within it. His philosophical inquiries were informed by his extensive background in the natural sciences and his experiences in the court of Macedon. The transition he makes in "Metaphysics" from Plato's ideal forms to a more materialist perspective marks a significant turning point in philosophical thought, underscoring his commitment to investigating the intrinsic nature of reality beyond mere perception. "Metaphysics" is essential for anyone seeking to grasp the underpinnings of metaphysical thought and the evolution of philosophy itself. Aristotle's work not only encourages deep reflection on key ontological questions but also invites readers to consider their own beliefs about reality. This classic text remains a vital resource for students, scholars, and anyone interested in the philosophical exploration of existence.

This book is an informal and readable introduction to higher algebra at the post-calculus level. The concepts of ring and field are introduced through study of the familiar examples of the integers and polynomials. The new examples and theory are built in a well-motivated fashion and made relevant by many applications - to cryptography, coding, integration, history of mathematics, and especially to elementary and computational number theory. The later chapters include expositions of Rabiin's probabilistic primality test, quadratic reciprocity, and the classification of finite fields. Over 900 exercises are found throughout the book.
