For the first time, here is the complete history of the International Finance Corporation (IFC). In the fifty years since the end of World War II, the world of development finance has grown rapidly. One of the many financial institutions which cropped up to help war-torn countries with their reconstruction was the IFC. International Business Expansion Into Less-Developed Countries examines the success of the IFC in its wide variety of public sector development activities. Covering thirty-five years of IFC operations, the book thoroughly evaluates the formulation of the concept of the IFC and its evolution as a viable global development finance agency. It is the most complete and up-to-date treatment available of the IFC. The administration and operational procedures are described in detail as are case examples of financial development in all regions. Problems encountered by the IFC and new and future activities of the IFC are discussed. Scholars of economic development and international finance will find the unusual way in which the IFC was established and the case examples presented a highly valuable reference, as will students of international studies and organizations.

In a context of neoliberal globalization, have the processes of elaboration and implementation of foreign investors' responsibilities by intergovernmental organizations reached the realm of legality? Using an analytical framework and a methodology that combines international law with international relations, this book provides a twofold answer to this question. First, it demonstrates that the normative integration of foreign investors' responsibilities in international investment law is fragmented and consistent with the interests of the most powerful actors. Second, while using the interactional theory of international law to assess the normative character of several international instruments elaborated and implemented by intergovernmental organizations, it highlights the sense of obligation that each instrument generates. The analysis demonstrates that such a codification process is marked by relations of power and has resulted in several social norms, with relatively few legal norms.

Essay from the year 2017 in the subject Economics - Finance, grade: MA, Yale University, language: English, abstract: International Finance Center (IFC) are an integral part of the modern international financial economy. One of its basic components is the availability of developed national financial markets, actively interacting with similar markets in other countries. As an example, the United States can lead the UK, Japan, in economic development which play an important role the financial markets, and the major cities of these countries (New York, London, Tokyo), are the major international financial centers. Cities can be seen as the gateway to the global economy. They are important for the functioning of both national and global economy, since they are concentrated huge financial, informational and intellectual resources, based most of the major industrial, commercial, financial and service companies, specialized credit and financial institutions and banks. In addition to traditional MFC in the last decades of the 20th century a number of new financial centers competing for the role of international. The acceleration of globalization and especially its financial component, led to an increase in strength and influence regional financial centers, in particular, such as Hong Kong (Hong Kong). 'Far from simply being a form of cost sharing between the "state" and the "market," PPP has been celebrated by some, and condemned by others, as the champion of change in the new millennium. This book has been written by the best minds in education policy, political economy, and development studies. They convincingly argue that public private partnership represents a new mode of governance that ranges from covert support of the private sector (vouchers, subsidies) to overt collaboration with corporate actors in the rapidly growing education industry. The analyses are simply brilliant and indispensable for understanding how and why this particular best/worst practice went global.' – Gita Steiner-Khamsi, Columbia University, New York, US This insightful book brings together both academics and researchers from a variety of international organizations and aid agencies to explore the complexities of public private partnerships (PPPs) as a resurgent, hybrid mode of educational governance that operates across scales, from the community to the global. The contributors expertly study the different types of partnership arrangements and thoroughly critique the value of PPPs. Some chapters explore how PPPs, as a policy idea, have been constructed in transnational agendas for educational development and circulated globally, whilst other chapters explores the role and implications of PPPs in developing countries, providing arguments for and against an expanding reliance on PPPs in national educational systems. The theoretical framing of the book draws upon leading theories of international relations to develop a unique perspective on the global governance of education. It will prove insightful for both scholars and policymakers in public policy and education.

Since 1985, national economies have become increasingly integrated into a global network. At the same time, both population and production in developing countries are becoming concentrated in urban regions. This, in turn, has generated demands for more local autonomy, shifting more decision making to sub-national levels. Globalization is expected to continue leading to greater openness and international mobility of capital and people. There are few reasons to believe that these trends will abate—if anything, they are likely to intensify the focus on cities and sharpen competition among these for international and local resources. This volume underscores the transformative role of globalization and urbanization and shows the interplay between the two forces.

Procyclicality of the financial system is a feature of any normally functioning economy. However, procyclicality can sometimes become 'excessive' leading to undesired effects on the real economy. The challenge that this volume addresses is to define 'excessive' and to identify policy actions that could produce superior outcomes.
