Religious commitments can be a powerful engine for progressive social change, and in this new book, Raúl E. Zegarra examines the process of articulation of religious beliefs and political concerns that takes place in religious organizing and activism. Focusing on the example of Latin American liberation theology and the work of Peruvian theologian Gustavo Gutiérrez, Zegarra shows how liberation theology advocates have been able to produce a new balance between faith and politics that advances an agenda of progressive social change without reducing politics to faith or faith to politics. Drawing from theologian David Tracy's method of critical correlation, the book focuses on key historical, philosophical, and theological shifts that have allowed liberation theologians to produce a new interpretation of the relationship between faith and politics in the Christian tradition, especially when issues of social justice are at stake. The book further approaches liberation theology's contributions to theorizing social justice through an unconventional path: a critical dialogue with the work of philosopher John Rawls. This dialogue, as Zegarra contends, allows us to see more clearly the contributions of liberation theology to the cause of progressive social change. Ultimately the book stands between "public religion" and "public reason," offering something of a blueprint for theological innovation and for how to remain committed to one's faith while respecting and defending the core values of democracy.

Secret Dialogues uncovers an unexpected development in modern Latin American history: the existence of secret talks between generals and Roman Catholic bishops at the height of Brazil's military dictatorship. During the brutal term of Emilio Garrastazœ Medici, the Catholic Church became famous for its progressivism. However, new archival sources demonstrate that the church also sought to retain its privileges and influence by exploring a potential alliance with the military. From 1970 to 1974 the secret Bipartite Commission worked to resolve church-state conflict and to define the boundary between social activism and subversion. As the bishops increasingly made defense of human rights their top pastoral and political goal, the Bipartite became an important forum of protest against torture and social injustice. Based on more than 60 interviews and primary sources from three continents, Secret Dialogues is a major addition to the historical narrative of the most violent yet, ironically, the least studied period of the Brazilian military regime. Its story is intertwined with the central themes of the era: revolutionary warfare, repression, censorship, the fight for democracy, and the conflict between Catholic notions of social justice and the anticommunist Doctrine of National Security. Repaso por el camino recorrido por la Iglesia en el Perú durante el siglo XX. La Iglesia católica ha tenido un rol protagónico en la historia del Perú desde el siglo XVI hasta nuestros días. Para mantener su vigencia y arraigo, esta institución tuvo que pasar por una renovación que implicó entrar en diálogo con el mundo moderno. Así pues, en su camino "modernizador", y a partir del Concilio Vaticano II (1962-1965), la Iglesia sentó sus nuevas bases en la teología de la liberación y en los diversos movimientos laicales, para complementar la labor hecha por la jerarquía. Asimismo, la Iglesia católica tuvo que adaptarse a las nuevas coyunturas que marcaron al país, como el régimen de Juan Velasco Alvarado y la época de violencia que surgió en los años ochenta; por ello, el último capítulo de este libro repasa las relaciones entre esta institución y el Estado a partir de la segunda mitad del siglo XX. Sin duda, este libro muestra el camino recorrido por la Iglesia durante el siglo pasado, que le ha servido para abrirse paso y consolidarse, con renovado ímpetu, en las nuevas generaciones.
