Whether implicitly or explicitly, borders have always harboured profound theological meaning. The border is, on the one hand, an instrument to establish an identity by demarcating oneself from others, but, on the other hand, it can also be experienced as a possibility of exchange. From an anthropological point of view, it is both a limitation and a starting point. Because of this ambiguity, particular attention must be paid to the fragility of those who live "on the margins", or "in magical territories" (Gloria Andalzua). Moreover, in our time, we observe a profound change in the existential experience of the "border". The reasons are many: problems related to climate change, access to clean water and air, differences in development and economic and financial resources, political instability and violence are pushing more and more people around the world to cross borders. This crossing could be the figure of a new humanity and a new cohabitation, in which the religious and spiritual resources of each person and each group can have their own role. As a result, theology is deeply involved in this reflection, but it must engage in dialogue with other disciplines--Excerpted from Editorial, page 7.

Las razones son muchas: los problemas relacionados con el cambio climático, el acceso a agua y aire limpios, las diferencias de desarrollo y de recursos económicos y financieros, la inestabilidad política y la violencia están empujando a cada vez más personas de todo el mundo a cruzar fronteras. La teología está profundamente involucrada en esta reflexión, pero debe entablar un diálogo con otras disciplinas.

La metáfora de «la frontera» evoca un talante que han querido tener los Foros sobre el Hecho Religioso: el deseo de romper el ghetto en que se han visto los creyentes más y más enclaustrados según avanzaba la modernidad. En el XXIII Foro (septiembre 1999) se quiso no sólo hacer de ese talante el objeto de la reflexión sociológica y teológica, sino también, y en primer lugar, presentar en vivo «un ejercicio de frontera»: y no de una frontera cualquiera, sino de la más radical: la que separa al creyente cristiano del increyente.No era un ejercicio fácil. Si no había de diluirse en retórica cortés ni quedar en diálogo de sordos, había de ser auténtico debate que exigiera a sus protagonistas, junto a la claridad de ideas sobre la propia posición, la capacidad y la seria voluntad de intentar comprender al "otro" en sus motivaciones y razones.
