Igualdade: uma visão antropológica propõe discutir a questão do igualitarismo em termos teóricos para depois considerar a aplicabilidade do conceito aos grupos sociais que apresentam um perfil consistentemente igualitário, além de observar como, em termos práticos, o igualitarismo é vivenciado no contexto desses grupos. Considera, também, a ideia da igualdade social que vigora no mundo moderno – em sintonia com a ideologia individualista – e que se mostra impossível de ser praticada, uma vez que a ideologia não explicita nem a natureza daquela igualdade nem as metas concretas a serem atingidas com sua aplicação. Quanto às sociedades caçadoras-coletoras igualitárias, observa-se que elas convivem com um tipo de desigualdade que – baseada nos desempenhos dos indivíduos mais competentes, como os bons líderes e os melhores caçadores – é revertida a favor da comunidade. Tal desigualdade é consentida porque é permitida e controlada pela maioria dos indivíduos, o que legitima os privilégios concedidos àqueles que melhor contribuem para os objetivos da sociedade, sem tirarem proveitos indevidos dessas concessões. Sua submissão às normas é fundamental para a manutenção dessa desigualdade consentida que, por resultar fundamentalmente em benefício da coletividade, pode ser considerada, na verdade, uma "desigualdade positiva". As fontes utilizadas foram as mais variadas, já que o texto recobre áreas afins, tendo como referência a questão da igualdade, focalizando as sociedades primitivas – particularmente, grupos de caçadores-coletores–, mas discutindo também problemas associados que vivenciamos no mundo moderno. "Igualdade" é um tema fundamental no campo antropológico, mas, como a abordagem é ampla, pode interessar também aos estudiosos de Direito, Sociologia, Filosofia, Política e aos que tratam da sociedade em geral. No mundo globalizado da atualidade, a questão da igualdade tem suscitado as mais variadas discussões, como tem acontecido também no Brasil ultimamente, o que pode interessar igualmente a um público não necessariamente acadêmico.
