Il presente lavoro consiste nella proposta di un itinerario didattico per una classe di prima liceo incentrato sulla figura del bambino in età mediavale, con l'obbiettivo di approfondire un aspetto di evidente taglio sociale - e generalmente poco o nulla esplorato - che possa contribuire s fornire agli studenti un quadro maggiormente completo riguardo alla civiltà dell'Occidente medievale. A partire dalla ricerca pioneristica di Philippe Ariès degli anni Sessanta la storiografia ha riesaminato e rivalutato notevolmente il ruolo e la centralità dell'infanzia nel contesto medievale: dal concetto di assenza del bambino si è passati a una fase che invece ne focalizza i segni di presenza. L'obiettivo è dunque quello di tradurre in chiave didattica le riconsiderazioni maturate dalla ricerca storiografica su un soggetto rimasto oscuro e marginale per molto tempo. Allo scopo di fornire un quadro d'insieme sull'argomento, l'itinerario è organizzato attorno ad alcuni nuclei tematici precisi, fra cui l'educazione e l'istruzione. il lavoro e i giochi. Un'attenzione particolare è stata data al concetto stesso di infanzia e a come quest'ultima sia stata percepita dalla collettività dell'epoca. Attraverso un percorso sull'infanzia medievale si è cercato di ricostruire tanto l'esperianza del bambino, quanto quelle dell'intera società che lo ha accolto e condizionato.

Lorenzo Polizzotto examines the educational, religious, political, and philanthropic practices of the Florentine youth confraternity of the Purification. Founded in 1427 at a time of unbounded optimism in Florence's future, the Purification was entrusted with the socialization of the youths.With the right education and training, these youths were expected eventually to lead Florence to its manifest destiny.The Purification's educational practices were solidly grounded in religious and humanist principles. In concert with the other youth confraternities, the Purification pioneered an educational programme which influenced pedagogical practices throughout Europe until the middle of the twentiethcentury. Its success made it an attractive prize for the contending political forces in Florence, becoming first an instrument of Medici ambitions and then of Savonarolan radical millenarism. Once Florence fell under the permanent rule of the Medici, the Purification sought to serve the city byturning to philanthropy, which it dispensed as a moral and educational duty.

Emerging Iconographies of Medieval Rome examines the development of Christian iconographies that had not yet established themselves as canonical images, but which were being tried out in various ways in early Christian Rome. This book focuses on four different iconographical forms that appeared in Rome during the eighth and ninth centuries: the Anastasis, the Transfiguration, the Maria Regina, and the Sickness of Hezekiah—all of which were labeled “Byzantine” by major mid-twentieth century scholars. The trend has been to readily accede to the pronouncements of those prominent authors, subjugating these rich images to a grand narrative that privileges the East and turns Rome into an artistic backwater. In this study, Annie Montgomery Labatt reacts against traditional scholarship which presents Rome as merely an adjunct of the East. It studies medieval images with formal and stylistic analyses in combination with use of the writings of the patristics and early medieval thinkers. The experimentation and innovation in the Christian iconographies of Rome in the eighth and ninth centuries provides an affirmation of the artistic vibrancy of Rome in the period before a divided East and West. Labatt revisits and revives a lost and forgotten Rome—not as a peripheral adjunct of the East, but as a center of creativity and artistic innovation.
