This book bridges theoretical gaps that exist between the meta-concepts of memory, place and identity by positioning its lens on the emplaced practices of commemoration and the remembrance of war and conflict. This book examines how diverse publics relate to their wartime histories through engagements with everyday collective memories, in differing places. Specifically addressing questions of place-making, displacement and identity, contributions shed new light on the processes of commemoration of war in everyday urban façades and within generations of families and national communities. Contributions seek to clarify how we connect with memories and places of war and conflict. The spatial and narrative manifestations of attempts to contextualise wartime memories of loss, trauma, conflict, victory and suffering are refracted through the roles played by emotion and identity construction in the shaping of post-war remembrances. This book offers a multidisciplinary perspective, with insights from history, memory studies, social psychology, cultural and urban geography, to contextualise memories of war and their ‘use’ by national governments, perpetrators, victims and in family histories.

Questo libro, che inizialmente avrebbe dovuto chiamarsi "Il sentiero del cinabro" e che poi l’autore mutò in bozza, venne completato entro la metà del 1962 e pubblicato dall’editore Vanni Scheiwiller nel marzo 1963, con lo scopo di rispondere alle polemiche suscitate dall’intellighenzia italiana all’uscita di Cavalcare la tigre nel novembre 1961, in quanto si riteneva intollerabile che fosse stato pubblicato un saggio di un autore ancora messo all’indice. Julius Evola lo aveva scritto per farlo pubblicare dopo la sua morte, ma prevalse la richiesta del giovane editore milanese. Non si tratta di un’opera autobiografica, precisa il filosofo, ma di una “guida attraverso i miei libri”, anche se trattando, più che di vicende e fatti personali, di idee e di quei valori tradizionali che hanno caratterizzato tutta la sua vita, ben gli si adatta la definizione di “autobiografia spirituale”. In quanto tale Il cammino del cinabro ha una importanza fondamentale ed è determinante non soltanto per ben comprendere il percorso delle tesi e della “visione del mondo” che mossero Julius Evola, ma soprattutto per constatare come ci sia un filo conduttore e una coerenza di fondo che legano tutte le sue opere e le posizioni che in esse vengono trasmesse.

Con l’avvento dell’Eiar, Ente italiano audizioni radiofoniche, derivata nel 1927 dell’Uri, Unione radiofonica italiana, che era nata nel 1924 - giusto cent’anni fa (auguri!) - gli italiani scoprirono la radio non solo come fonte di informazione ma anche di intrattenimento musicale, oltre che come efficacissimo mezzo di propaganda. La produzione di canzoni di quei due decenni - 1924/1944 - del secolo scorso fu abbondante e, spesso, qualitativamente pregevole; purtroppo non è mai stata raccontata come merita, anche perché ha sempre sofferto dell’accusa di «strumento del Regime» – cosa che pure fu, ma solo in parte. Lo scherzoso titolo, Eiar Eiar Alalà, cita e riprende modificandolo – come già avevano fatto all’epoca alcune «fronde» antifasciste, per sbeffeggiare l’emittente di Stato, tacciata non a torto di favoreggiamento del «sistema» – il motto «Eia Eia Alalà», coniato da Gabriele D’Annunzio già durante la Grande Guerra per sostituire il «barbarico hip hip urrà», e in seguito entusiasticamente adottato dal Regime. In queste pagine troverete quindi 130 fra le canzoni, molte notissime ancora oggi, che hanno accompagnato, attraverso la radio e i dischi, la vita degli italiani di quegli anni, in schede che ne presentano gli autori e gli interpreti, ne descrivono la composizione della musica e lo sviluppo del testo, e le inquadrano nel contesto storico del periodo in cui sono state scritte, registrate e diffuse. È un contributo alla riscoperta di un repertorio finora ingiustamente trascurato.
