Il volume contiene anche analisi e recensioni di libri di saggistica e narrativa nonché contributi sui “nomi propri” che hanno segnato l’intero anno: da Berlusconi a Belting, da Latour a Touraine, da Augé a Bolaño, da McCarthy a Kundera.

A partire dai primi anni del XX secolo, anzitutto in area germanofona e poi in Italia e in altri contesti, all’interno delle concezioni che hanno insistito sull’autonomia come carattere distintivo dell’arte, si è fatto ricorso a più riprese alla metafora dell’insularità. Le particolarità di un’isola – l’essere separata dalle altre terre e “incorniciata” dal mare, l’avere contorni ben definiti, il distinguersi per particolari elementi autoctoni – sono state adattate all’opera d’arte per rivendicarne l’autosufficienza semantica e la conseguente esigenza di essere compresa e interpretata secondo principi a essa immanenti. Di qui l’impiego di vocaboli quali il tedesco Inselhaftigkeit e il suo corrispettivo italiano “insularità”. Alla storia di questi termini in ambito estetico e storico-artistico, che coinvolge personalità come Simmel, Lukács, Dessoir, Ortega y Gasset, Schlosser, Croce, Betti, Pareyson e altri studiosi, sono dedicate le pagine di questo volumetto.

The 'invisible masterpiece' is an unattainable ideal, a work into which a dream of absolute art is incorporated but can never be realized. By means of this metaphor borrowed from Balzac, Hans Belting shows the variety of ways in which the status and meaning of the masterpiece have been elevated and denigrated since the early nineteenth century. The history of the masterpiece coincided with the history of the public museum. Leonardo's Mona Lisa and other celebrated paintings preoccupied later artists, who felt burdened by the one-time cult of the masterpiece as it had been transformed into the cult of visible works of art. Following Duchamp, artists became increasingly resistant to the notion of the masterpiece. Beginning in the 1960s, Conceptual and Minimal artists concentrated on ephemeral forms and manufactured multiple copies in order to reject the outmoded status of the one-off masterpiece and the art market that fed off it. The Invisible Masterpiecereveals works, events and individuals in the history of Western art in a wholly novel way.

Drawing on Freudian theories of sexuality and Kant's conception of the beautiful, French art historian Hubert Damisch considers artists as diverse as Raphael, Picasso, Watteau, and Manet to demonstrate that beauty has always been connected to ideas of sexual difference and pleasure. Damisch's tale begins with the judgment of Paris, in which Paris awards Venus the golden apple and thus forever links beauty with desire. The casting of this decision as a mistake—in which desire is rewarded over wisdom and strength—is then linked to theories of the unconscious and psychological drives. In his quest for an exposition of the beautiful in its relation to visual pleasure, Damisch employs what he terms “analytic iconology,” following the revisions and repetitions of the motif of the judgment through art history, philosophy, aesthetics, and psychoanalysis. This translation brings an important figure of the French art historical tradition to Anglo-American audiences.
