Miranda Wells, diciotto anni, capelli biondi come ranuncoli, pelle candida come i fiori di melo che le ricoprono il vestito mentre legge un romanzo francese anziché dedicarsi alle ben più pressanti faccende di casa, è una ragazza dalla bellezza squisita e dall’animo limpido, amante delle cose eleganti e ancora preda dei sogni infantili. È per questo che quando, nella primavera del 1844, a casa Wells arriva la lettera di un lontano parente, il ricco proprietario terriero Nicholas Van Ryn, che la invita a trascorrere un periodo presso di lui, Miranda comincia a sognare di allontanarsi dai genitori, e in particolare dal padre, rigidamente religioso, per vivere la vita piena di emozioni che ha sempre desiderato. Van Ryn ha bisogno di lei per un motivo concreto, far compagnia alla figlia Katrine, eppure a Miranda quella sembra l’unica possibilità di sfuggire a una quotidianità ottusa e banale. Una volta arrivata a Dragonwyck, la tenuta della «strana e sregolata» famiglia Van Ryn nella Hudson Valley, stato di New York, la ragazza ne rimane immediatamente stregata. Sembra proprio un incantesimo, quello che promana dalle mura di una villa tanto audace da parere un castello, con la sua torre gotica, i frontoni, i comignoli, i giardini fioriti e gli interni lussuosi. Allo stesso modo Miranda è affascinata dal padrone di casa, Nicholas, con le sue mani lunghe e sottili e l’abitudine di portare sempre un fiore all’occhiello. Tutto sembra perfetto, dunque, nella sua nuova vita in cui i confini del gusto e della moralità sembrano spingersi sempre un po’ piú in là. Perfetto, anche se nell’ombra piú fonda dei sottoscala infestati di voci si rincorrono sussurri e sotto le chiome degli alberi si nascondono segreti. Ma è quando gli occhi del padrone di casa finiscono per cadere sempre piú spesso su di lei che la vita di Miranda, oltre che perfetta, rischia di diventare pericolosa.
