Len Lye: A Biography tells for the first time the story of a unique, charismatic artist who was an innovator in many areas - film, kinetic sculpture, painting, photography and poetry. Born in New Zealand in 1901, Len Lye gained an international reputation in the arts and had friendships with many famous people - including Dylan Thomas, Robert Graves, Gertrude Stein, John Grierson, Norman McLaren, Oskar Fischinger, John Cage, Robert Creeley, Laura Riding, Stan Brakhage, and the artists of the New York School. A colorful bohemian, Lye lived in London from 1926 to 1944 (where he made highly original hand-painted films for John Grierson's GPO Film Unit), then moved to New York for the last 36 years of his life. Describing Len Lye as a 'trailblazer' and a 'one-man modern art movement' in Sight & Sound, Ian Francis also celebrated this superb biography as 'the definitive piece of Lye scholarship'.

This volume of new work revitalizes the question of authorship by connecting it to larger issues of identity--in film, in the marketplace, in society, in culture. Essays range from the auteur theory and Casablanca to Oscar Micheaux, from the American avant-garde to community video, all illuminating how "authorship" is a complex idea with far-reaching implications. This ambitious and wide-ranging book will be essential reading for anyone concerned with film studies and the concept of the author.

Cinema Muto written by Jesse Lee Kercheval and has been published by SIU Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2009-02-25 with Poetry categories.

In Cinema Muto, Jesse Lee Kercheval examines the enduring themes of time, mortality, and love as revealed through the power of silent film. Following the ten days of the annual Le Giornate del Cinema Muto in Italy, this collection of ekphrastic poems are love letters to the evocative power of silent cinema. Kercheval’s poems elegantly capture the allure of these rare films, which compel hundreds of pilgrims from around the world—from scholars and archivists, to artists and connoisseurs—to flock to Italy each autumn. Cinema Muto celebrates the flickering tales of madness and adventure, drama and love, which are all too often left to decay within forgotten vaults. As reels of Mosjoukine and D. W. Griffith float throughout the collection, a portrait also emerges of the simple beauty of Italy in October and of two lovers who are drawn together by their mutual passion for an extinct art. Together they revel in recapturing “the black and white gestures of a lost world.” Cinema Muto is a tender tribute to the brief yet unforgettable reign of silent film. Brimming with stirring images of dreams, desire, and the ghosts of cinema legends gone by, Kercheval’s verse is a testament to the mute beauty and timeless lessons that may still be discovered in a fragile roll of celluloid.

Deleuze And Cinema written by Felicity Colman and has been published by Berg this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2011-06-01 with Performing Arts categories.

Gilles Deleuze published two radical books on film: Cinema 1: The Movement-Image and Cinema 2: The Time-Image. Engaging with a wide range of film styles, histories and theories, Deleuze's writings treat film as a new form of philosophy. This ciné-philosophy offers a startling new way of understanding the complexities of the moving image, its technical concerns and constraints as well as its psychological and political outcomes. Deleuze and Cinema presents a step-by-step guide to the key concepts behind Deleuze's revolutionary theory of the cinema. Exploring ideas through key directors and genres, Deleuze's method is illustrated with examples drawn from American, British, continental European, Russian and Asian cinema. Deleuze and Cinema provides the first introductory guide to Deleuze's radical methodology for screen analysis. It will be invaluable for students and teachers of Film, Media and Philosophy.
