La riscoperta della vendetta: Perché la vendetta deve essere considerata unicamente nella sua accezione negativa, come crimine, o danno inflitto ad altri per pareggiare un oltraggio subìto? Gianluigi Carpeggiani compone invece un vero e proprio elogio alla vendetta, provando a dimostrare che i valori espressi da tale sentimento si rivelano come sostenitori delle regole di convivenza civile e hanno un'accezione positiva fondata sul consentire l'esercizio di una libertà fondamentale, quella di fare giustizia e ristabilire l'equilibrio dei valori violati. Per legittimare la sua tesi, l'autore svolge un esame approfondito dei valori insiti nella vendetta, dal punto di vista storico, etico, religioso, sociale e giuridico. Partendo dall'analisi semantica del termine e dei suoi vari significati e accezioni, propone di utilizzare il termine "restituzione", che richiama il concetto di "non dovuta sopportazione di una ferita ricevuta", ma non ha connotazioni negative; procede con una ricca disamina dei rapporti fra la vendetta e il mondo reale, il cinema, lo sport, la religione, la sua relazione con l'etica e il concetto di castigo, richiamando i contributi di giuristi, filosofi e letterati che si sono occupati del tema della vendetta, o in ambito più esteso della giustizia. La vendetta-restituzione esprime dunque secondo Carpeggiani un valore innato nell'uomo, la supremazia del diritto naturale sul diritto positivo, e ha un ruolo fondamentale nell'impedire la debolezza e lo sfaldamento dell'intero sistema sociale.
