Il mito greco narra del giovane Perseo, figlio di Zeus, che affronta la Gorgone Medusa per decapitarla, salvando così anche la madre. La dea Atena fornisce all'eroe lo scudo riflettente che gli permette di non incrociare in modo diretto lo sguardo pietrificante del mostro. La “mitobiografia” articolata nel testo vede in questo racconto la radice di una duplice vocazione: alla riflessione filosofica e all'analisi della psiche, individuando come origine comune ad entrambe un peculiare “ampliamento dello sguardo” – quello appunto inaugurato dall'impiego dello scudo di Atena da parte di Perseo. Esso apre una terza via fra l'affrontamento diretto del sommamente perturbante, perlopiù destinato allo scacco, e l'idealizzazione di chi pretende di “guardare in alto” senza fare i conti con le proprie angosce: una via che, invece, può aprirci a una nuova dimensione, in cui la consapevolezza non è disgiunta dalla vitalità.

Il tema degli usi civici è, ancora oggi, di scottante attualità, tanto da transitare, nell’ultimo ventennio, dalla sfera di interesse degli storici del diritto a quella di giuristi “positivi”, ordini professionali, istituzioni e associazioni ambientalistiche. I più sensibili verso questo istituto sono i notai che, di fronte alla complessa regolamentazione della materia, chiedono norme precise per la sicurezza delle transazioni di terreni. In un pregevole studio sulla commerciabilità dei terreni ad uso civico del 1994, i notai mettevano in evidenza l’orientamento prevalente della giurisprudenza di cassazione di ritenere radicalmente nullo, senza possibilità di sanatoria, l’atto di vendita compiuto in violazione della legge “unificatrice” del 1927 per mancanza dell’oggetto ai sensi dell’art. 1418 comma 2° cod. civ. Lo studio – che metteva in luce la “rivitalizzazione” degli usi civici associata ad una loro impropria riqualificazione in funzione ambientalistica – enunciava con la chiarezza tipica di chi è costretto a misurarsi direttamente con l’istituto, le problematiche emergenti.

Temples are the most prestigious buildings in the urban landscape of ancient Italy, emerging within a network of centres of the then-known Mediterranean world. Notwithstanding the fragmentary condition of the buildings remains, these monuments and especially their richly decorated roofs are crucial sources of information on the constitution of political, social and craft identities, acting as agents in displaying the meaning of images. The subject of this volume is thematic and includes material from the Eastern Mediterranean (including Greece and Turkey). Contributors discuss the network between patron elites and specialized craft communities that were responsible for the sophisticated terracotta decoration of temples in Italy between 600 and 100 BC, focusing on the mobility of craft people and craft traditions and techniques, asking how images, iconographies, practices and materials can be used to explain the organization of ancient production, distribution and consumption. Special attention has been given to relations with the Eastern Mediterranean (Greece and Anatolia). Investigating craft communities, workshop organizations and networks has never been thoroughly undertaken for this period and region, nor for this exceptionally rich category of materials, or for the craftspeople producing the architectural terracottas. Papers in this volume aim to improve our understanding of roof production and construction in this period, to reveal relationships between main production centres, and to study the possible influences of immigrant craftspeople.

[Italiano]: In un momento così significativo per la storia europea e mondiale, questo volume vuole essere la raccolta di riflessioni scientifiche condotte sui rapporti tra le scelte politiche, le azioni militari e la fisionomia delle città e del paesaggio urbano, sull’evoluzione delle strutture e delle tecniche di difesa, sulla rappresentazione della guerra e dei suoi effetti sull’immagine urbana, sul recupero delle tracce della memoria cittadina. Da una parte il campo delle Digital Humanities apre nuove prospettive per studiare l'immagine della città prima, durante e dopo la guerra, dall’altro le tecnologie digitali impegnano studiosi e ricercatori di varie discipline: in particolare nell’ambito del disegno viene esplorato il ruolo della rappresentazione nella formulazione dei progetti urbani di difesa e nella documentazione degli eventi bellici e delle tracce lasciate dai conflitti, mentre nell’ambito del restauro vengono approfondite le sfide teoriche e pratiche imposte dai danni arrecati dai conflitti ai centri storici, passando in rassegna casi studio, soluzioni e dibattiti relativi alla conservazione del patrimonio urbano coinvolto in azioni di guerra, con un'attenzione particolare all'identità e alla memoria collettiva./[English]: At such a significant moment in European and world history, this volume aims to be a collection of scientific reflections about the relationships between political choices, military actions and the physiognomy of cities and the urban landscape, about the evolution of defence structures and techniques, about the representation of war and its effects on the urban image, and about the recovery of the traces of city memory. On the one hand the field of Digital Humanities opens up new perspectives to study the image of the city before, during and after the war, on the other hand digital technologies engage academics and researchers from various disciplines: In particular, in the area of drawing, the role of representation in the formulation of urban defence projects and in the documentation of wartime events and the traces left behind by conflicts is explored, while in the area of conservation, the theoretical and practical challenges imposed by the damage caused by conflicts to historic centres are explored, reviewing case studies, solutions and debates relating to the conservation of urban heritage involved in wartime actions, with a focus on identity and collective memory.
