Beginning in the 18th century, a turning point in labour history as work encountered an industrialising modernity, this book explores how different forms of work have been valued up to the present day. Focusing on the cultural, intellectual, social and political implications of wages, the chapters in this collection historicise the labour market, conceiving it as complex system of social relations which evolve through time and differ according to space. They show how the level of wages and other forms of remuneration reflect not only marginal productivity and scarcity but also the nature of work relations and wider political, social and economic circumstances. With examples ranging across several centuries and different parts of the globe, it shows how wages are influenced by the specific organization and processes of work, conflict and power, social status and hierarchies between workers, custom and identity, family structure and professional ethics, ideology, politics and policy. Combining quantitative and qualitative approaches The Value of Work since the 18th Century also addresses two interlinked questions; how did theoretical interpretations and techniques of wage measurement emerge and evolve, and to what extent does this matter in understanding the social and political history of work?

All’inizio del Novecento, le Scuole d’Applicazione per gli Ingegneri introdussero in Italia alcuni insegnamenti relativi alla nuova tecnica costruttiva del calcestruzzo armato. Nella Scuola di Bologna si delineò una situazione didattica privilegiata, trovandosi ad insegnare, l’uno accanto all’altro, Silvio Canevazzi, personalità tra le più rinomate nell’ambito della comunità scientifica d’inizio secolo, e Attilio Muggia, uno dei protagonisti del panorama costruttivo nazionale, pioniere nel campo delle costruzioni in cemento armato. Gli autori indagano le vicende relative ai primi decenni di attività della Scuola di Bologna nel campo della ricerca e dell’insegnamento intorno al nuovo materiale, grazie al quale gli ingegneri qui laureati all’inizio del Novecento poterono asservire una tecnica già matura e notevolmente raffinata ad una eclettica mescolanza di linguaggi compositivi.

Il nostro paese possiede un ricco patrimonio di beni artistici-musicali che riguarda strumenti antichi non sufficientemente tutelati: le indagini diagnostiche sono un efficace mezzo utile a interventi di restauro che potrebbero portare non solo al recupero di strumenti musicali – alcune vere e proprie opere d'arte – ma anche al recupero di mondi sonori affascinanti che hanno da sempre reso grande la tradizione musicale della nostra Italia. Il mio percorso di musicista, la mia pratica sul clavicembalo, mi ha portato con curiosità e interesse ad un approccio storico, organologico e scientifico volto ad uno studio totale che ha interessato lo studio e l'analisi delle decorazioni pittoriche sul clavicembalo italiano costruito da Ugo Annibale Traeri nel 1729 conservato presso il Museo Davia Bargellini a Bologna. In questo mio lavoro ho affrontato direttamente sul campo il problema della difficile conservazione degli strumenti musicali nei nostri musei. In particolare, sul clavicembalo Traeri che versa in condizioni conservative molto critiche sia dal punto di vista organologico che artistico, si è ritenuto opportuno, in collaborazione con il centro di ricerca ENEA di Bologna, suggerire una metodologia d'indagine preliminare alla progettazione di un intervento di restauro vero e proprio che è stata completata dall'utilizzo dello strumento informatico per una realizzazione di un progetto di restauro virtuale con particolare riferimento appunto alle decorazioni pittoriche. I risultati ottenuti dalle indagini diagnostiche effettuate sul clavicembalo, in particolare, dalla microscopia elettronica a scansione (SEM) accoppiata alla microanalisi, hanno contribuito alla realizzazione del presente lavoro.
