C’è una parte d’Europa sconosciuta ai più, quella degli Stati fantasma: territori che hanno dichiarato l’indipendenza senza essere riconosciuti come tali a livello internazionale. Sono entità che vivono in un limbo diplomatico, nate quasi tutte negli anni Novanta. Abchazia, Ossezia del Sud, Transnistria, Gagauzia e Nagorno-Karabakh sono luoghi ai più sconosciuti dove scoppiano conflitti locali spesso ignorati in Occidente, che hanno lasciato sul campo una scia di vittime, di relazioni spezzate e di separazioni violente. A esserne colpite sono Moldavia, Georgia e Azerbaigian, tutte ex repubbliche dell’Unione Sovietica. A cui va aggiunta, più di recente, la guerra in Ucraina per il Donbass. Ad appiccare il fuoco, con l’eccezione del Nagorno-Karabakh, è sempre la stessa mano, quella russa. E nelle terre di nessuno non esiste lo stato di diritto o, quando c’è, è estremamente precario. A questo si aggiungano l’indipendenza a metà del Kosovo e i casi di Scozia e Catalogna, che scuotono non solo l’Europa in quanto tale ma l’intera Unione europea. “Lì dove in questi anni era possibile intravedere un germoglio di appartenenza europea che lottava per affermarsi e crescere, prima o poi è sempre arrivato Paolo Bergamaschi per proteggerlo e raccontarlo”.
