C’è anche un delitto, compiuto con fondants ripieni di veleno per topi, probabilmente quel veleno “Ultima cena” che non concede scampo; ma il delitto sbaglia destinatario e... Non vi dirò tutto ... Dunque, un libro assolutamente delizioso, se appena avete inclinazione ai disordini ben regolati dell’intelligenza, se vi diverte una conversazione illimitata e apparentemente senza lacune». Attraverso gli occhi di una novantanovenne, spesso confusa, sempre poco reattiva rispetto agli accadimenti, sfila l'esilarante galleria delle ospiti di un bizzarro ospizio per anziani, votato alla missione della ricerca di Sé. Si tratta di donne molto diverse, impietosamente ma affettuosamente dipinte con tutte le degenerazioni (estetiche e intellettive) e le loro personali ed eccentriche manie. Il loro dialogo, godibilissimo, finisce per intessere una bizzarra visione del mondo. Nella storia, poi, si fanno strada elementi surreali ed eccessivi, densi di ironia, che conducono il romanzo verso un finale liberatorio e irridente.

Nella consapevolezza che mai riuscirà a raccontare davvero la sua esistenza, Virginia Woolf indugia in ricordi fondamentali dell’infanzia e dell’adolescenza, si interroga sui meccanismi della memoria e tratteggia il carattere di personaggi essenziali del suo panorama interiore. Qui c’è, insomma, la materia prima della sua immaginazione. Del tutto diverso è il tono di Sono una snob?, un testo che fu letto dalla scrittrice medesima alla riunione del Memoir Club il 1° dicembre 1936. La scrittrice rivolge su di sé la propria ironia acuta e infallibile e ammette che sì, lei è una snob, in senso letterale è sine nobilitate – niente stemmi e castelli nella sua famiglia che di nobiltà si nutre nello spirito e nella mente –, e disegna un ritratto godibilissimo, pungente, buffo della società dell’epoca.
