From the early 1870s through the 1880s, language, consciousness, and the body stood as cornerstones of the philosophical project that culminated in Nietzsche's "anthropology of knowledge." Asserting both the timeliness and lasting value of Nietzsche's writings during this period, Emden argues that they were not based on a specific understanding of the philosophy of language or a specific conception of truth but were instead shaped by his interest in the theory of knowledge, philological scholarship, and contemporary life sciences.Leveraging a truly astounding command of eighteenth- and nineteenth-century scientific and philological texts, Emden is able to situate Nietzsche's writings on language and rhetoric within their wider historical context, allowing him to distill the content of Nietzsche's writing from the form of his radical presentation. Cette conférence est l'une des premières réflexions de Nietzsche sur la relation apollinienne-dionysienne dans la création de l'art. Les premiers essais de Nietzsche témoignent d'un amour pour Wagner, Schopenhauer et la philosophie présocratique, à l'instar de Heidegger. Le titre original allemand de cette conférence est "Das griechische Musikdrama". Il s'agit de l'une des trois grandes conférences qu'il a données à Bâle immédiatement après avoir accepté un poste à l'université de Bâle. À l'âge de 24 ans, Nietzsche a accepté une chaire de philologie en 1869, ce qui lui a permis de faire la connaissance du compositeur, qui vivait à Tribschen. Au cours de cette période, Nietzsche donne trois conférences qui préfigurent son orientation future : "Le drame musical grec" le 18 janvier, "Socrate et la tragédie" le 1er février, et "La vision dionysiaque du monde" en juillet/août 1870. Se sentant limité par les sujets philologiques, Nietzsche cherche à devenir professeur de philosophie. Ses écrits reflètent les influences de deux sources principales : la philosophie de Schopenhauer et les œuvres musicales et théoriques de Wagner. L'influence de Wagner est particulièrement nette ici, car cette conférence oppose essentiellement les idées de Wagner sur la "Gesamtkunstwerk" (ou "œuvre d'art totale"), qui intègre toutes les disciplines artistiques en une seule performance cohérente, à la vision pessimiste de la vie de Schopenhauer. L'art, synthèse complète de tous les types d'art, devient un antidote à ce chaos. Le drame musical grec a été présenté par le nouveau professeur Nietzsche le 18 janvier 1870 au musée de Bâle et publié par la suite par la fondation administrée par sa sœur. Cette conférence a été publiée pour la première fois dans le volume "Gesammelte Werke" édité par Peter Gast (pseudonyme de Heinrich Köselitz, un proche collaborateur de Nietzsche) et Elisabeth Förster-Nietzsche (la sœur de Nietzsche). Ils ont été inclus dans la deuxième série de ces œuvres rassemblées sous le titre "Philologica", publiée en 1897. Cette nouvelle traduction 2024 du manuscrit original allemand, latin et grec contient une nouvelle postface du traducteur, une chronologie de la vie et de l'œuvre de Nietzsche, un index avec des descriptions de ses principaux concepts et des résumés de l'ensemble de son œuvre. Cette traduction est conçue pour permettre au philosophe amateur de s'engager profondément dans les œuvres de Nietzsche sans avoir à être un universitaire à plein temps. La langue est moderne et claire, avec des structures de phrases et une diction simplifiées pour rendre le langage et les arguments complexes de Nietzsche aussi accessibles que possible. Cette édition pour lecteurs contient également du matériel supplémentaire qui amplifie le manuscrit avec un contexte autobiographique, historique et linguistique.
