In novant'anni di storia, dal 1922 al 2011, abbiamo avuto il Ventennio fascista e il quasi-ventennio berlusconiano: per poco meno di metà della nostra vicenda nazionale abbiamo scelto di farci governare da uomini con una evidente, e dichiarata, vocazione autoritaria. Perché? Una risposta possibile è che siamo un popolo incline all'arbitrio, ma nemico della libertà. Vantiamo record di evasione fiscale, abusi edilizi, scempi ambientali. Ma anche di compravendita di voti, qualunquismo: in poche parole una tendenza ad abdicare alle libertà civili su cui molti si sono interrogati. Da Leopardi a Carducci che dichiarava "A questa nazione, giovine di ieri e vecchia di trenta secoli, manca del tutto l'idealità", fino a Gramsci che lamentava un individualismo pronto a confluire nelle "cricche, le camorre, le mafie, sia popolari sia legate alle classi alte". Per tacere di Dante con la sua invettiva "Ahi serva Italia, di dolore ostello!" e di Guicciardini con la denuncia del nostro amore per il "particulare". Con la libertà vera, faticosa, fatta di coscienza e impegno sembriamo trovarci a disagio, pronti a spogliarcene in favore di un qualunque Uomo della Provvidenza. L'ultima occasione perduta è stata Tangentopoli, una grande spinta di rivolta contro la corruzione cui non è seguita una stagione di rinnovamento, bensì un periodo tra i più bui della nostra democrazia. Pesa su questo atteggiamento la particolarità di una storia difficile e divisa. Lo spirito civico, infatti, non si improvvisa. La lealtà e l'orgoglio nazionale non si istituiscono per decreto. Ma se c'è un momento in cui avremmo bisogno di una svolta, di un empito d'orgoglio nazionale, è proprio l'attuale. Questo libro, un'indagine colta e curiosa su una pericolosa debolezza del nostro carattere, è anche un appello a ritrovare il senso alto della politica e della condivisione di un destino. La libertà, intesa come il rispetto e la cura dei diritti di tutti, non è un'utopia da sognare ma un traguardo verso cui tendere.

The full-fledged dialogue with the hard-core sciences opens up; philosophy of life and the human creative condition draws together all the radiations of life into its field of inquiry. Tymieniecka thus proposes a new mathesis universalis - the dream of Leibniz and Husserl - which can at least be fulfilled.
