Il Giro d’Italia ha un sapore mitico: sembra esistere da sempre, eppure ha una sua storia, che accompagna e in cui si riflette la storia culturale e sociale dell’Italia. Questo libro la ripercorre, dagli esordi e nei suoi sviluppi, per circa un secolo. A fianco della narrazione scorrono, diventandone parte integrante, oltre duecento immagini d’epoca, in gran parte provenienti dall’archivio Torriani (sino a oggi inesplorato), di cui si utilizzano pure vari documenti, che conferiscono a questo volume significativi elementi di novità. Mimmo Franzinelli, da appassionato delle due ruote, ricostruisce le vicende del ciclismo agonistico italiano e della sua gara principale partendo dalla creazione stessa della bicicletta e dalle grandi innovazioni di fine Ottocento. Rievoca le gare pioneristiche, dal Giro di Lombardia del 1905 alla Milano-Sanremo del 1907, per concentrarsi poi sul Giro d’Italia, modellato sul Tour de France, la prima classica corsa a tappe. Ne sono protagonisti campioni quali Girardengo e Binda, Bartali e Coppi, ma anche straordinarie donne come Alfonsina Strada e oscuri gregari come Carrea e Malabrocca. Nel microcosmo delle due ruote si intravedono in filigrana i mutamenti epocali del Novecento italiano. Se a inizio secolo la bicicletta era ancora considerata una “macchina eversiva”, diverrà presto un simbolo della modernità, che ha i suoi cantori in poeti, narratori e giornalisti sportivi. Ci sono infine, ma non da ultimo, gli organizzatori, con cui il Giro d’Italia degli anni d’oro si è identificato: Armando Cougnet, promotore nel 1909 della prima edizione, e Vincenzo Torriani, il Patron dal 1949 al 1992. La narrazione culmina nell’ultima grande stagione del ciclismo, animata da Adorni, Gimondi, Moser, Merckx... Poi le cose sono cambiate: pesanti condizionamenti finanziari e l’esteso ricorso al doping hanno snaturato lo sport, ma questa è un’altra storia.

Colin O'Brien, giornalista irlandese residente da oltre vent'anni in Italia, ricostruisce con magistrali pennellate la storia del Giro attraverso i personaggi che l'hanno reso unico, ricevendone in cambio l'immortalità nella memoria degli sportivi. Dalle gesta eroiche dei pionieri, tra polvere, fango, sudore e tanta improvvisazione, agli anni del dominio incontrastato di Alfredo Binda e a quelli del fascismo, che trovò nel ciclismo, una disciplina che è l'apoteosi della forza e della resistenza fisica, un efficacissimo strumento di propaganda.
