Ho frequentato per un certo tempo santi padri e teologi, sono andato con predicatori, esorcisti, medici, anatomisti, naturalisti, speziali, “minerari” e “pratici investigatori”, ciarlatani, spacciatori di segreti, vagabondi e zerganti, buffoni e cantimbanchi e simil genìa.»Con queste parole Piero Camporesi presenta gli essais raccolti nel Governo del corpo: brevi saggi in cui, lasciandosi guidare dai sensi e dalla corporalità, Camporesi esplora e analizza alla luce di testi del passato le idiosincrasie del presente su salute, alimentazione, bellezza, igiene, sesso. In un procedere rabdomantico e curioso attraverso ricettari, pamphlet, almanacchi, fogli volanti, libri morali, ci troviamo in queste pagine a confrontarci con l’inquinamento dell’aria e l’ossessione per la pulizia, la liberalizzazione sessuale e il fanatismo dietetico, la scomparsa del concetto di inferno e la crisi degli ospedali, la demonizzazione del tabacco e le sofisticazioni alimentari, in un ritratto spietato del rapido mutamento di tendenze, gusti e pregiudizi nel contemporaneo. Il Saggiatore prosegue la ripubblicazione del corpus delle opere di Piero Camporesi con Il governo del corpo, un’antologia dei «saggi in miniatura» usciti sul Corriere della Sera fra il 1985 e il 1990. In queste pagine Camporesi riesce a raggiungere una sintesi perfetta, utilizzando la cultura come una lente per osservare la società: un filtro programmaticamente inattuale, all’interno del quale unire in un’immagine nitida quello che altrove appare sconnesso.
